Learning about the weather isn’t always the most exciting topic, right? However, including a weather memory game in the mix? Game changer! That can definitely make teaching & learning about the weather meaningful, memorable, and fun!

Teaching weather is typically a topic covered in the earlier years of education. When I was a teacher, I remember including a morning circle time into my pre-k days. Circle time typically consisted of learning the days of week, the months of the year, emotions, and teaching weather!

We’d have a weather bear (did you know there are weather sloths now?! SO adorable!) and the kids would take turns dressing it appropriately for the weather. They’d look forward to this each and every day but, when it came to learning more about the weather, it was often difficult to find engaging & memorable activities.

Thankfully, you guys won’t have to worry about that!

Weather Memory Game

One of my favorite parts of being a homeschool mom & blogger is that I get to put my creative skills to use by making printables for my kids and my readers. It makes me so happy when I’m able to help make learning exciting for the kids and easy for you, my fellow homeschool parents.

To help in teaching weather to the kids, I’ve created a fun, hands-on printable weather memory game. It’s my favorite price, free, and should prove to be super beneficial in your homeschool days whether your teaching weather to kindergarten-age children or older!

Types of Weather

My weather memory game includes more than your typical “rainy, sunny, cloudy, snowy” weather activities. I mean, you should know by now that I tend to be an overachiever, so of course I made this memory game as thorough as I could.

The weather memory game includes the following playing pieces:

  • hurricane
  • lightning
  • windy
  • tornado
  • sunny
  • snowy
  • windy
  • overcast
  • foggy
  • hail
  • sunrise
  • sunset
  • wind sock
  • weather alert
  • umbrella
  • rainbow
  • low temperature
  • high temperature
  • hazy
  • heavy rain
  • downpour
  • cloudy
  • starry night
  • thunder storm
@thathomeschoolfamily Just one of many printables for you guys, this weather memory game is a great way to teach your kids about weather in a hands-on & fun way! #weather #homeschoolfreebies #printable #kindergarten #homeschool #elementary #homeschoolmom #thathomeschoolfamily #memorygame ♬ original sound – Liz | That Homeschool Family

In addition to providing plenty of weather-related cards, I’ve also included multiple card options making the game accessible for both readers & non-readers:

  • a set of cards featuring a weather graphic with text
  • a set of cards featuring a weather graphic without text
  • a set of cards featuring text only

Having multiple card options also gives you the option of various gameplay versions! For example, for a younger child, you could have them match same:same and, for an older child, you could have them match two different types of cards (like matching the “weather graphic without text” card to the “text only” card).

Did you know that there are at least 25 different ways to play memory games, too? Wild, right?! Be sure to check out that article when you get a chance because the suggestions will certainly help to extend the use of the weather memory game!

Weather Memory Game Preparation

Just as many of my printables require little preparation on your part (our time is valuable!), the weather memory game will just require a few minutes of prep time.

It’s totally up to you, but I definitely suggest printing out the memory game on cardstock and laminating the pieces before cutting them out for game play. Doing so will require a tiny bit of effort on your part, but they’ll help to make the pieces more durable, allowing them to be enjoyed for extended play!

When the game isn’t being played, the pieces can be stored in anything from a zip baggie to a manila envelope for storage. Make sure to label the game pieces on your storage selection so you and the kids can easily access them in the future.
