Thanksgiving Silly Stories: Fill in the Blank Printables

Making up some Thanksgiving Silly Stories are a great way to make memories while learning this holiday season! My fill-in-the-blank Thanksgiving stories are just the things that’ll get the kids giggling all month long!

Teaching the parts of speech isn’t one of most exciting parts of homeschooling, right? Even when I was a teacher, I was always on the search for ways to make teaching various subjects and content more exciting than “just” filling out worksheets and learning through repetition.

When possible, I’m always happy to include games and other fun activities in our homeschooling days. They just make learning memorable and fun, you know?

That being said, it’s no surprise that my kids have done their fair share of the fill-in-the-blank stories when working on learning their parts of speech. Not only do the silly stories make get the kids laughing, but they also help to solidify their understanding of learning their parts of speech.

This Thanksgiving, we’ll definitely be including my Thanksgiving silly stories in our days. You should, too!

Thanksgiving Homeschooling

There are plenty of ways to include a bit of Thanksgiving festivities into your homeschool day! Some of our favorites are:

  • Themed Writing Prompts: Including Fall-themed writing prompts and National Days to Celebrate in November writing prompts are both great ways to encourage the kids to write and think creatively!
  • Gratitude Activities: Thanksgiving Cootie Catchers are a hands-on way to help the kids show gratitude over Thanksgiving! You could also encourage them to write a thank-you note to a member of the armed forces, send a letter to a long-distance relative, or even a neighbor!
  • Budgeting: A super important life skill! Have the kids join you on trips to the supermarket to shop for your Thanksgiving meal or have them look through grocery store ads and create a list of items for a “fake” Thanksgiving dinner.
  • Cooking: You bet my kids will be joining me in the kitchen this Thanksgiving, just as they have in Thanksgiving Days past. Being able to make a meal is another important life skill!
  • Learning the Historical Meaning: Thanksgiving is way more than what we learned in 90s public schools. Take this holiday as an opportunity to do some deep dives in learning about the indigenous people in your area and beyond.

Even though preparing for Thanksgiving can be hectic, I promise it’s worth the time to include the kids in the preparations and to include some Thanksgiving-themed activities into your schedule!

Thanksgiving Silly Stories

First, I gotta say…my kids LOVE filling out silly stories so I have a pretty good feeling your kids will enjoy them, too. I swear, silly stories are one of the main ways my kids have learned their parts of speech.

What’s a silly story? Well, you might notice they look familiar to some popular fill-in-the-blank type activities with a name that may or may not rhyme with “fad mibs.”

Silly stories are stories that are almost complete, requiring the kids to use their creativity to come up with a variety of words to fill in the blanks. The kids don’t get to pick just any ol’ word, though – they have to provide specific parts of speech and such like:

  • nouns
  • verbs
  • adjectives
  • pieces of furniture
  • relative
  • food
  • location
  • dessert

In just a sec, you’ll be able to request my free Thanksgiving silly story printables. For now, though, let’s go over the directions for completing your fill-in-the-blank stories:

  • Gather your Words: Look at the list of blanks and fill in each one with the type of word it asks for (e.g., noun, verb, adjective). Be creative and silly for extra fun!
  • No Peeking: Don’t read the story while filling in the blanks—just focus on the word list for now. It’s more fun if it’s a surprise!
  • Fill in the Blanks: Once all the blanks are filled, copy your words into the spaces in the story.
  • Read your Story: Read the completed story out loud to yourself, your friends, or your family. Get ready to laugh at the funny and unexpected results!
  • Read and Enjoy: Let everyone take a turn creating their own version to see how different (and hilarious) the stories turn out!

As a parent of two silly kids, I must mention…when it comes to having the kids provide words for the various parts of speech, items, relatives, etc., you may want to set some ground rules. Or not!

My kids would be thrilled to make every word somehow related to a body part or bodily function (don’t clutch your pearls), so I know I’d have to compromise and maybe limit them to, say” 2 yuck words per story. Or something like that.

It’s totally personal preference, though. At the end of the day, I’m honestly just happy that they know the difference between and adjective and a verb, you know?!
