What are State Flowers & Why are They Important?
Since you’re reading this article, I’m sure you’ve noticed how certain flowers (and even certain trees!) are tied to specific regions of the United States. If you go on educational travel adventures with your kids, they’ve likely noticed how hibiscus flowers are all over the gorgeous state of Florida, but nowhere to be seen in, say…Maine. Given the difference in average temperatures between the two states, it makes sense…but there’s more to the the story!

State flowers are more than just pretty plants – they’re symbols of state heritage! They help to tell the story of the history of the state and its people. Many state flowers were selected through official legislative action, often after public polls or campaigns.
Can you imagine voting for something seemingly trivial like a state flower after voting for something as important as a state governor?! I can’t! Have you ever done this? I’d really love to know!
Anyways, state flowers usually represent something special about the state. It could be that the flower thrives in local soil or could even be tied to history or culture. Neat, right?
For example, the New Jersey state flower is the common violet. Having grown up in South Jersey, I can honestly say I understand why the common violet is the state flower – it grows in the Garden State wherever it pleases! No need to trek out to the local garden center to buy a flat or two of violets…nope! The purple flowers pop up in lawns, on the side of highways…all on their own. They’re so pretty and a wonderful spring sign that warmer weather is on the way.

State flowers can help to tell a story of the state and can also create a sense of identity and pride. As you’re studying the states within the United States of America, including the states flowers is certainly worth the time!

Including State Flowers Flashcards in your State Studies
I know there is some controversy when it comes to using flashcards as an educational tool: some say flashcards don’t help while others say flashcards can be a wonderful learning tool. I don’t know – I see flashcards as being a helpful tool. What do you think?
Either way, I feel like including state flowers flashcards into your homeschool lessons (especially when doing state studies!) is a fun & interactive way to learn about flowers!
Engaging Visual Tools
Pictures stick in your memory much more easily than plain text, right? I mean, it’s one of the reasons I try to take my kids on all sorts of adventures – they’re more likely to learn from experiences than from reading (boring) text inside of the standard textbooks. This is why flashcards can be so powerful! When the kids see the vibrant photos of the state flowers, they’re more likely to remember the colors & shapes of the flower making it easier to recall the state flower information quickly.

Flashcards tap into the brain’s natural preference for visual information! This isn’t just my opinion either – studies even show that pairing images with words significantly boost memory retention! That’s reason enough for me to encourage my kids to use flashcards!
Portability & Convenience
When we’re not teaching our kids at home, we’re likely schlepping them around town for various classes & get togethers, right? Like so many of my free printables, I love that these state flowers flashcards are perfect for on-the-go learning. Print ’em out on some cardstock (we have an older model of this Epson Eco-Tank printer – the ink lasts FOREVER, making this a fabulous printer especially for homeschool families), laminate, and stick inside a durable bag for learning on the road!
Flashcards are great for including a bit of learning in between extracurricular classes, during a quick coffee break, and even in a hotel while taking a break from an educational travel adventure (like when you’re attending a homeschool convention!)

Interactive & Fun for all Ages
Flashcards aren’t just about flipping through and memorizing facts…boring! Flashcards can be turned into a game by using them for oral quizzes, racing to name the flowers (put your finger over the name of the flower at the bottom of the card and have the kids guess!), playing memory-matching challenges (print out two sets…or grab our free State Flowers Memory Game Set!) or perhaps a state flower version of Go-Fish?
With flashcards, kid aren’t just looking at a stack of facts…they’re given the opportunity to learn in a meaningful, memorable, and fun way!

About the State Flowers Flashcards
I know you’re ready to download the state flower flashcard PDF, right? That’s coming up in just a sec, but let me share a bit about what the PDF includes, m’kay?
The set of flashcards includes 1 card for each of the 50 states in the United States featuring:
- Standard Paper Sizing: The cards are sized to fit on regular 8.5×11-inch paper, so no need to hunt down a specialized size at the store or online. You can totally print the cards on standard printer paper but, for extended durability, I definitely suggest printing them on cardstock before laminating.
- Optimized Layout: I am all about helping families save money when it comes to homeschooling, so I have made sure to have the flashcards arranged so paper waste is minimized. The first 12 pages of the PDF each have 4 flashcards per page while the last page only has 2 (you know…because 50 isn’t evenly divisible by 4)
- Printer-Friendly Design: The flashcards are colorful, but not overly bold to ensure you won’t use too much ink!
