Teaching about Snowflakes
When I was a teacher, incorporating a lesson about snowflakes into my winter lesson plans was a no-brainer. After all, I grew up in New Jersey and spent many winters playing in the snow! Learning about snowflakes is fun, but, if you’re looking for some specific reasons kids should learn about snowflakes…I got you!
A Gateway to Science
Snowflakes introduce kids to important scientific concepts like weather, states of matter, and crystallization! Not only can they learn about how temperature and humidity work together to shape our environment, but learning about snowflakes can spark curiosity about topics like the water cycle, clouds, and precipitation!
When my oldest was still in public school, his loved when his teachers would incorporate fun videos from GoNoodle because they were super silly, but still filled with learning opportunities. All these years later, I still remember singing the “Water Cycle” song from Blazer Fresh!

Wonder and Curiosity!
Snowflakes can be super tiny, right?! Snowflakes can show how something so tiny can be incredibly detailed and full of beauty. Discovering that no two snowflakes are alike teaches kids to appreciate nature’s creativity while encouraging them to ask questions and investigate the world around them.
Do you know the size of the biggest snowflake on record? You’ll find out in my activity packet!
Hands-On Fun
Learning about snowflakes can include engaging, hands-on activities like cutting paper snowflakes or even examining real snowflakes underneath a magnifying glass. This connects science to arts & crafts, making learning meaningful, memorable, and fun!
By the way, have did you know that snowflakes can be preserved and turned into keepsakes & jewelry? I discovered snowflake artist Danielle Oliver on social media and have been ogling her snowflake jewelry ever since! It’s all so gorgeous and takes me back to my childhood days spent playing in the snow.

Teaches about Uniqueness & Symmetry
Snowflakes are a great way to talk about symmetry and patterns in nature! They also help kids reflect on how everyone is unique, just like snowflakes, fostering self-esteem and individuality.
And, yes, there are symmetry activities in the snowflake life cycle activity packet! The kids are going to love it!
Connects Kids to the Seasons
Learning about snowflakes can help the kids to understand (and appreciate!) winter and seasonal changes, allowing them to explore how plants, animals, and humans adapt to snowy weather.
Observation & Critical Thinking Skills
Examining how snowflakes form help kids to think critically about the cause & effect in nature while encouraging observation skills! Snowflakes are filled with so many beautifully intricate details!
You know what? You may even want to take the snowflake activity even further and include some winter-themed writing prompts!

Lifelong Lessons in Appreciation
Learning about something as small as a snowflake can help kids to appreciate the little things in life while teaching them that even the tiniest details in nature can hold beauty & importance!

Snowflake Books & Sites
While there’s plenty to be learned using the snowflake life cycle activity packet, it’s always fun to include multiple opportunities for learning, right?! You may consider including a few of the following books in your snowflake unit study:
- Snowmen at Night – I bought this book when I was a teacher and have read it to my students (and my own children!) many many times. It doesn’t contain any snowflake information, but rather encourages kids to think creatively and can help them to want to learn more about topics like snow, snowflakes, and weather.
- The Everything Kids’ Weather Book – An informative book for introducing & learning about multiple types of weather!
- The Story of Snow – This book goes over details on snowflakes and even has photographs of magnified snowflakes!
In addition to books, there are plenty of websites worth checking out when learning about snowflakes! Here are a few:
- BrainPOP – One of my favorite interactive sites as a teacher and a homeschool parent, BrainPOP has multiple free & paid video & comprehension activities available on snowflakes & more.
- Art for Kids Hub – one of my favorite free art resources, Art for Kids Hub has a step-by-step “How to Draw a Snowflake” video that could be fun for the kids!
- Mr. Schuette’s Art Class – Learn how to make snowflakes with paper & scissors in this YouTube video! The kids will turn your home into a winter wonderland in no time flat.
- The Science of Snowflakes – This YouTube video explains the science of snowflakes and shows magnified images of snowflakes (can you tell I think snowflakes are gorgeous?!)
