Get the Christmas countdown started with cute, printable advent calendar coloring pages! Not only are these printables great for helping kids to know “how many days left until Christmas?!,” but…did you know there’s actually some educational value to completing an advent calendar?

You bet!

If you ask my kids, the countdown to Christmas actually begins on December 26 – the day after Christmas! Too funny, right?

What can I say? Christmas is one of our favorite family holidays and, every year, we really look forward to December 25.

I totally get why kids get so excited about Christmas. There are usually plenty of tasty treats to munch on, the Elf on the Shelf is extra mischievous at night, the house is decorated in twinkling lights while pine-scented candles burn, and the radio plays Christmas music nearly non-stop! Plus, what’s not to love about the anticipation of waking up on Christmas morning to find wrapped gifts under the Christmas tree?

On the educational front, homeschooling lessons are often chock full of Christmas writing prompts, reading Christmas books, and more!

Christmas is a magical time!

In an effort to make the Christmas countdown as exciting (and accurate) as possible, I went ahead and made some super cute printable advent calendar coloring pages for the kids. Not only will they help with the anticipation of “the big day,” but they’ll actually have the kids learning without even realizing it!

Score!

Let the Christmas Countdown Begin!

Growing up, I remember begging my parents for one of those chocolate filled advent calendars from the dollar store. Not only did it provide a nice, daily treat, but it also helped me to count down to my favorite day of the year!

Did you know advent calendars actually date back hundreds of years? Wild, right? What once was known as the “season of Advent,” grew into a humble 19th century German practice of making tally marks on a door or wall, only to explode into a worldwide annual Christmas purchase.

Some advent calendars are still pretty low key (like my advent calendar coloring pages), but there are actually many that sell for thousands of dollars (if not millions!). Wild, right?

If you’re looking for some interesting history deep-dives during the Christmas season, I’m thinking it could be super eye-opening to learn the full progression of advent through the years. Let me know if you give it a go!

Either way, counting down the days until Christmas is a worldwide tradition and I’m happy to share my (free) contribution with you guys!

Educational Benefits of Completing an Advent Calendar

I mean, you’re reading this article on a homeschooling blog, so OF COURSE I’m going to share the educational benefits of completing a Christmas countdown with my printable advent calendar (I’m just a tad partial, m’kay?).

You don’t have to tell the kids about these benefits, but they can certainly help you to justify including yet another Christmas activity into your holiday season. The kids will have fun while learning, what’s not to love about that?!

While completing an advent calendar in December, the kids will be working on skills like:

  • Understanding Time & Patience: This is a BIG one! Just as we use the wall calendars and flip calendars to help the kids learn the days of the month and months of the year, advent calendars can help them to learn the art of “counting down” while strengthening their patience in anticipation of the big day.
  • Counting and Number Recognition: Typically a skill taught to the littles, doing a Christmas countdown helps to solidify counting and number recognition abilities, lending a hand to strengthening early math skills.
  • Cultural & Religious Learning: Completing a printable advent calendar can help to open the door to conversations and activities surrounding the reasoning behind a Christmas countdown as well as a variety of other cultural celebrations.
  • Goal Setting & Completion: I am so guilty of this myself – setting goals and never completing them! That being said, I bet my printable advent calendar coloring pages could help the whole family to set goals and complete them! There’s just something satisfying about finally completing a goal, don’t you think??

You should totally include one our favorite Christmas traditions this year: wrapping paper selection day!

Now, my printable advent calender coloring pages don’t necessarily come with any extension activities. You could certainly include some small Christmas activities, like writing prompts, or Christmas crafts, each day, though, to encourage growing problem solving skills, creativity, and gratitude!

Cough, Cough…you should totally including completing a Christmas decorations scavenger hunt into your holiday festivities, too! Driving around & seeing the decorations in town is one of our favorite Christmas traditions!
