Free Printable Patriotic Bookmarks for Kids (Coloring Book Style!)
Who doesn’t love the mix of a good book, a splash of color, and a little patriotic pride? If your kids are anything like mine, they’re always looking for something fun and hands-on to do—especially when a holiday rolls around. Printable, coloring book-style patriotic bookmarks tick every box; they’re simple to print at home, easy for kids of all ages to decorate, and make reading just a little more special.
My other themed-bookmarks have always been a big hit, so I’m hoping these printable patriotic bookmarks will come in handy for learning about (and celebrating) holidays like the Fourth of July, Memorial Day, Election Day, or Flag Day. There’s something extra sweet about seeing your child mark their spot in a book with a piece of art they colored themselves. Plus, it’s an easy way to spend time together, talk about the meaning behind these holidays, and encourage that all-important love for reading. So grab your markers or colored pencils, and let’s add some red, white, and blue to your next story time.

Why Patriotic Bookmarks are Perfect for Kids
When it comes to getting kids excited about books, little touches can make a big difference. Patriotic bookmarks, especially in a coloring book style, do way more than just save a page. They give kids a personal project to show off, a fun way to learn, and a little spark of pride all at once. If you want something that combines creativity, reading, and even a bit of American spirit, these bookmarks truly hit the mark.
Practical Value for Young Readers
Kids can lose their place in a chapter faster than you can say “snack break.” Bookmarks keep things organized so they won’t miss a beat. Plus, when the bookmark is something they made themselves, I find they use it even more.
Some of my favorite reasons why bookmarks work so well for kids:
- Better organization: Kids remember where they left off, which cuts down on frustration.
- Boosts responsibility: Having something special gives them a reason to take care of their books.
- Built-in motivation: Coloring a bookmark before starting a new story makes reading feel extra special.
With a simple printable, you suddenly have a reading helper and a mini art project in one.
Inspiring Both Reading and National Pride
Using a patriotic bookmark is like having a little flag waving from the pages of a book. I’ve seen kids get a sense of pride from something as small as a hand-colored star. When they read, they’re not just following a story, they’re celebrating something bigger.
The benefits are pretty clear:
- Reading stays fun: Every time they open a book, that burst of color welcomes them back.
- Positive feelings about country: Small things, like a colored flag or firework, help kids feel included in national traditions.
- Creation leads to connection: Kids personalize their bookmarks, so the meaning sticks with them.
So, while it might just look like a simple bookmark, it starts to mean a lot more. It can spark conversation, build confidence, and make both reading and celebrating feel like a special event at home.

If you couldn’t tell, my kids and I are all about celebrating patriotic holidays & learning about the United States of America. They had a blast watching all of the 2024 election content, love learning about all the states, and…one of my kids even wants to join the military one day. (which would result in me being equal parts terrified for and proud of him).
Sometimes it’s a struggle getting them to read books, so I made these patriotic bookmarks, along with all my other printable bookmarks, to help encourage them to read independently. I used to read to them a ton when they were tiny, but…now they’re in middle school and don’t always want me reading aloud to them. Having themed bookmarks help to make their reading time a bit more special!
The patriotic bookmarks come as a PDF with 2 pages of bookmarks, each page with a total of 4 bookmarks.
Within the PDF, you’ll find bookmarks with the following themes:
- “AMERICA” with stars in the background
- “Life, liberty, and the persuit of reading!” with the Statue of Liberty & fireworks in the background
- “Star Spangled Reader” with stars and stripes in the background
- “Proud to be an AMERICAN!” with fireworks & stars in the background
- “Freedom to read, freedom to DREAM!” with a book & patriotic banner in the background
- “BOOKS are a national treasure!” with a stack of books
- “Uncle Sam wants YOU…to read another chapter!” with an image of Uncle Sam & stars
- “USA” with the flag in the background

To get the most out of your printable patriotic bookmarks, here are some tips:
- print at home: we bought our Epson Eco-Tank a few years ago and it’s an absolute workhorse of a printer. The ink lasts an amazingly long time! It definitely one of my favorite homeschooling items.
- print on cardstock: while standard printer paper would work just fine, if you print on cardstock, the bookmarks will be sturdy & likely last longer!
- laminate for extra durability: to help the bookmarks last even longer, consider laminating them after the kids have colored in the designs. Since many laminators use a heat process, I also suggest avoiding coloring the bookmarks with crayons &, instead, using colored pencils or markers.
