Let’s be honest, here. The least exciting parts of homeschooling are the homeschool planning & record keeping. If it were up to me, we could just skip over those boring (though often state-required) portions of homeschooling and go right to the fun activities, adventures, and lessons. That wouldn’t be very responsible of us though, would it?

Homeschool Planet, an online homeschool planning tool, makes those homeschool requirements as painless, accurate, and stress-free as possible. Dare I say, utilizing the Homeschool Planet platform actually makes planning & record keeping easy…and maybe even a little bit fun? With a side of satisfaction?

It’s true. And, if you’ve been around That Homeschool Family for a bit, you know I pride myself on providing honest & accurate homeschool reviews and such, so…if I say a resource is helpful and downright awesome, I mean it.

My Record Keeping Woes

Before I was a homeschooling parent, I was a teacher in the traditional school setting. Part of my duty, as a teacher, was to turn in weekly lesson plans to my administration. I did not like this job requirement one bit. The planning tool was clunky and redundant. It was difficult to use, easy to mess up, and downright frustrating.

When my husband and I decided we were going to start homeschooling our boys, my mind went straight to the dreaded task of lesson planning. After spending years in the blogging and content creating space, I knew I didn’t want to handwrite lesson plans. After all, I consider my computer keyboard an extension of my hands. I type faster than I can write.

I didn’t want to be stressed out by lesson planning and didn’t want to worry about losing paperwork or somehow mess up record keeping. Because we were living in a very relaxed homeschooling state at the time, I kept basic notes about our activities in my phone’s calendar.

The problem? The kids wanted to see their schedule. I tried making dry-erase homeschool assignment charts for them, but that was too messy. I tried “just” verbally telling them their assignments, but they’d forget assignments (I don’t blame them) and have to keep asking me to repeat. I tried connecting my phone’s calendar to a smart touch screen in our kitchen, but they would somehow forget it existed or get overwhelmed because my calendar also included all of our family plans and my business schedule.

We have since moved to a state with a few more (relaxed) homeschooling regulations, so I’ve had to “up” my game on keeping records. We’re also in the middle of moving from an “all in one” sort of online curriculum (that kept records for me!) to a more eclectic mix of digital and material homeschooling curriculum.

Homeschooling is always evolving in our home. That being said, it had been frustrating trying to figure out what would work best for our family.

The change and need for more accurate record keeping was bound to happen at some point. Luckily, I’ve been able to start including Homeschool Planet into our homeschooling routine.

Why Use the Homeschool Planet Planner?

At this point, I’ve had a good amount of time to explore and utilize the Homeschool Planet planner in our own homeschool activities. I could go on an on about the reasons you should get yourself an Homeschool Planet account but I’d have to say these are my top reasons Homeschool Planet is an invaluable tool when it comes to homeschooling:

  • It’s easy to use.
    • Whether you’re a technology wiz or not, figuring out how to use Homeschool Planet is super easy. Within the program are a number easy-to-follow video tutorials for every aspect of homeschool planning and record keeping. If, for whatever reason, you’re not able to figure out how to use some portion of this online homeschool planner, you can always contact Homeschool Planet directly.
  • It’s completely customizable.
    • Homeschooling is completely customizable, so our planners should be, too! Homeschool Planet can be customized for the number of children, the number (and level) of subjects, assignments, deadlines, and more. Not only can the actual planning and record keeping be customized, but you can also customize the digital background using a number of provided general, holiday, and seasonal-themed images, assign specific colors for subjects & activities, and even customize your “school” calendar days.

  • It’s multi-functional.
    • Think Homeschool Planet is “only” a planning and record keeping tool? Ha…..think again, my friend! Homeschool Planet offers a number of optional (but really really cool) features like:
      • ability to communicate with your “students” and planner participants (maybe your spouse contributes to planning?) using their integrated messaging system
      • ability to integrate your planner with your existing Google Calendars and Apple i-Cals.
      • option to print personalized daily or weekly assignments (my kids and I loved this!)
      • option to have daily assignments emailed and/or texted to your kids
      • widgets! The Homeschool Planet platform has a number of widgets ready for you to use. Plan a shopping list, create a to-do list, keep track of the local weather, utilize a search engine, read inspirational quotes and more!

    • You know how so many of your homeschool curriculum options come with lesson plans? Well, you’ll have the option of implementing the digital version of those lesson plans into your online homeschool planner. In literal minutes, lesson planning could be DONE. (this blows my mind) Even if you don’t have the digital lesson plans, you can purchase them from Homeschool Planet’s Lesson Plan & Curriculum Marketplace. They even have “ready made school” packages of curriculum sets organized by grade level (including options for secular/neutral packages!). These are genius and such a time and sanity-saver for us already-busy homeschool parents!
  • It has a free trial!
    • Ladies & gents, put away those credit cards for the time being. Homeschool Planet’s Free Trial comes without strings, allowing you to try this super helpful online homeschool planner for 30 days with no credit card required. Our Experience with Homeschool Planet

So far, we’ve found Homeschool Planet works best for us when I handle the online portion and my boys utilize the printed version of their weekly schedule. We will likely use the emailed schedule and online access for them in the future, but not just yet. They’re still getting used to having an email address and aren’t used to checking it often. They also recently got phones (more for safety when we travel than for actual phone calls) and I’m trying to keep them off the phones more than on, you know? Printing the schedules work well for us.

After I have all of our weekly lessons and activities in the Homeschool Planet planner, I go ahead and print off one weekly copy per child. We prefer to print the schedule in “landscape” so that it’s easy for the kids to fold the paper to show the assignments each day (see my video below, or on TikTok – it’s not easy to describe this in writing, but I show it in the video!).

Since homeschooling is way more than “just” completing curriculum, I also like to record any “extra” learning activities they participated in each day in the space below the printed planner (also shown in the video). That way, I have a record of the activities they did, like playing with LEGO, and can enter said activities into the online platform making record keeping super easy and thorough.

FREE Homeschool ID Cards!

Slightly off topic, but still relevant in the realm of homeschooling…let’s chat about homeschool ID cards a bit, shall we?

There are so many homeschooling discounts out there. I’m partial to a great deal, so I’m going to do whatever I (reasonably) can to get said great deal. To take advantage of the discounts, many retailers require homeschooling parents to provide some sort of homeschooling identification.

Not only can Homeschool Planet help with organizing your homeschool planning and record keeping, but they can also help you to get your own homeschool ID cards…for free! It’s super easy to get these cards, too. Just visit their website, fill out the required information, upload a photo, and print your free teacher and student Homeschool ID cards for free.

Is Homeschool Planet Worth it?

We all have different ways of measuring and deciding what’s worth including in our lives and what’s not. At the current pricing of $7.95/month or $69.95/year, I am confident in saying “yes, Homeschool Planet is worth it for my family.” For the state of mind, sanity, and ease in planning and record keeping Homeschool Planet allows, it’s worth the current pricing and then some.

I also appreciate that Homeschool Planet offers a true, no strings attached (did you sing that a la *NSYNC? I did. #90skid) free trial by not requiring a credit card. I’ve had trouble canceling free trials before, so it’s certainly refreshing to see such a client-centric option available. Go ahead and give it a try – I’d love to hear how Homeschool Planet makes your homeschool parent life better!

I’m excited to continue using the Homeschool Planet platform with my kids! In addition to making my life a little easier, I’m also thinking that, in a year’s time, my kids will be more responsible for their education thanks to Homeschool Planet!

Until next time, stay safe and enjoy quality time with your family,
