The Online Book Club Kids (and Parents!) Love
Want your kids to get involved with a book club, but don’t want to take on the daunting task of organizing one yourself? I’m sharing an online book club option that will not only get your kids looking forward to reading and learning but will also relieve a bit of stress and responsibility from your shoulders!
Listen. I’m a busy homeschool mom and I’m willing to bet you’re a busy homeschool parent, too. We want the best educational experiences possible for our kids, but we also need to maintain our sanity a bit, right? As much as we’d love to provide every moment of the quality homeschool experience for our kids, sometimes it just makes sense to outsource.
In this case (and some others), I find it best to outsource book club activities. I’m no stranger to reading. Heck, I gobbled up chapter books by dozen growing up. I still enjoy reading and will often read aloud to my own kids.
But, do I enjoy pausing every chapter to review vocabulary words or complete writing exercises? Do I really enjoy coming up with creative art projects that correlate with the book? Do I want to come up with a themed “we’re finished reading the book” party complete with decorations and foods?
Um. Not necessarily. I mean, I wish I could always be that person, but in my *cough, cough* 40 *cough, cough* years, I owe it to myself to admit that I’m not always as creative as I’d like to be. When I was in my 20s, and teaching in a classroom, I’d spend hours doing all that, but I like to go to sleep at a decent hour now.
You, too? No shame, my friend, no shame.

About Literary Adventures for Kids
First things first, let’s chat a bit about the specifics. Even though I know that Literary Adventures for Kids is an awesome program, I’m going to share all the details with you guys so that you can make an informed decision for your own family. Homeschooling in an investment, you know? It’s worth taking the time to get all the deets before diving headfirst into a program!

Age Levels
You know the feeling when you find a homeschool program that’s literally perfect for your kids, but then they age out and you have trouble finding something equally as awesome to replace it?
Well, you won’t need to worry about that with these online book clubs because Literary Adventures offers online programs for elementary through high school levels.
Online Instruction
Let me be the first to start the movement to change the term “homeschooling” to “hardly ever at home-schooling.” You guys, one look at my homeschool planner and I’m exhausted. Because of that, I am not about to waste my time or money on a homeschool program that doesn’t allow for flexible learning.
With Literary Adventures for Kids, nearly all of the instructional content takes place virtually. Instructors (and fellow homeschool moms!) Dachelle McVey and Chantelle Grubbs provide instruction through live & recorded videos, allowing your homeschoolers to complete lessons & activities on their own time and at their own pace.
Online Book Clubs
Surprise! When I first found out about this program, I was like “oh, yay – an online book club option for my kids” and I was excited about that. You know what, though? It’s so much more than “just” a program for virtual book clubs.
You guys! Literary Adventures for Kids can act as a full language arts program with a side of art, home economics, and sometimes even history. Dachelle and Chantelle have gone above and beyond by creating immersive, hands-on online book club experiences that check of a number of the “must teach” information when homeschooling.
An average online book club from Literary Adventures for Kids spans about 4 weeks. Within those 4 weeks, kids are introduced to the book’s vocabulary words and are encouraged to complete copywork in a journal (I’m not always a fan of copywork, but I am a fan of legible handwriting…and copywork helps with that!). They’re also provided with “rabbit trails” throughout the chapters as well as various art challenges.
The rabbit trails might be my favorite part because they allow the kids to get some background, historical information related to the book and could even lead to new interests and areas of study! The rabbit trails are often provided in a combination of content such as short videos & vocabulary.
Towards the end of the book club, kids complete a writing assignment and then are rewarded with “Party School.” Party School is super fun, but still educational in that it also adds a bit more hands-on and immersive learning by including book-themed foods, decorations, and activities!

Poetry!
I’m gonna be honest – I don’t have much faith in my ability to teach my kids about poetry. I can read it, I can speak it…I have no desire to teach it, so I’m outsourcing this instruction to Literary Adventures for Kids!
Yes, they have poetry classes, too!
Socialization
Our homeschool kids get plenty of socialization already but, should your kids choose to participate in the live Poetry Tea Time classes or the Live Online Book Club classes, they’ll get to interact with their peers & their instructor!
Teacher Office Hours
You guys, when I was going through my schooling, teacher office hours only existed in college…and often at inconvenient hours. Dachelle & Chantelle, though? They’ve got office hours, they’ll chat during the live classes, and they’ll help out through email. They genuinely care about your child’s experience with Literary Adventures for Kids and are there to help out!
Why We’re Including Literary Adventures for Kids in our Homeschool
Can you believe there are more reasons I think this program is awesome? I’ve already listed plenty, but just in case you need a bit more convincing that Literary Adventures for Kids is worth trying out for your family, here are my top 5 reasons we’re including these virtual book clubs in our homeschool days:
- It makes my life easier. I promise, I teach and take care of plenty of learning opportunities for my kids, but I will be the first to admit that I need a break from time to time. Outsourcing homeschool instruction doesn’t make me (or you!) any less of an awesome homeschool parent. There’s power in admitting a need for assistance and freedom/relief in finally allowing someone (or something) else to take care of that need. Literary Adventures for Kids allows my kids to participate in a fun, educational reading program while taking the possibility of any stress I’d experience when planning and carrying out such a program.

- It makes homeschool planning easier. Yes, I used to be a teacher and yes, I could probably write lesson plans in my sleep, but Literary Adventures for Kids makes it so I don’t have to. They provide lesson plans, schedules, materials lists…everything that is needed to plan ahead for their lessons. All parents need to do is follow those plans and the educating is all taken care of. So easy!
- It’s a program that will grow with my kids. Yes, I know I mentioned this in the beginning of the article, but I can’t stress enough how important and wonderful it is to have a quality program you can use and trust for the duration of your child’s education. Too many times have we started a program and then my kids would age out. In fact, we’re starting a new-to-us co-op this year that currently ages out at 13 years old…so we really are only “guaranteed” one good year of full family participation at this point (crossed fingers and fairy dust welcome to encourage an extension of this program!)

- The variety is second to none. Literary Adventures for Kids has such a variety of books available in their virtual book clubs that we’d really have a difficult time finding a series my kids wouldn’t want to do. Seriously. Nearly 200 book clubs are available at any moment on top of the live book clubs and live poetry teatimes. We’re talking online book clubs for The Hobbit, Island of the Blue Dolphins (this is what we’re working on now!), Of Mice & Men, Little House in the Big Woods, and so many more. There’s even a number of Christmas-themed online book clubs!

- I love supporting small businesses. I have bought (and will continue to buy) plenty from large businesses, but just something special about homeschool moms coming together to create quality homeschool resources for kids, you know? It’s obvious that Dachelle and Chantelle care about both the material and the kids they’re teaching. The videos & activities are super fun and are often accompanied by instructors in themed costumes and/or backgrounds (right?! That’s dedication!). Literary Adventures for Kids really is a great company and I’m happy to support them.
Wait…I’m not done. There’s another reason why Literary Adventures for Kids is so awesome. It’s going to need a bigger section, though. Let’s do this!

Value of Online Book Clubs
Take a look through the Literary Adventures for Kids offerings and you’ll see that their membership and sets provide an incredible bang for your buck. To be able to have multiple online book clubs, multiple poetry teatime lessons, and check off a number of the “to teach” boxes for all the kids in your household? Worth it’s weight in gold.
You know what else? There are so many ways to get books for free (or cheap) that, besides the cost of whatever supplemental activities you choose to do alongside the virtual book clubs, there really is minimal additional costs after the purchase of your bundle or membership.
Even better? It’s a good thing you’ve decided to read my article about these book clubs for homeschoolers because I have a coupon code that’ll score you 20% off your order with Literary Adventures for Kids! YES, this will even work on the yearly membership!
To get 20% off, just enter the code ThatHomeschoolFamily (not case specific) at in the “coupon code” box at checkout, click “apply,” and watch the magic happen.

If you’re not quite ready to sign up for the membership, that’s ok! Literary Adventures for Kids does offer a 7 day free trial, allowing you and the kids to “try before you buy!” You could also try out a free online book club, too! Depending on your child’s reading & ability level, give one of these a try:
- Elementary Level: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs Online Book Club (watch the movie afterwards!)
- Elementary & Middle School Level: Wonder Online Book Club (watch this movie afterwards, too!)
- High School Level: Call of the Wild Online Book Club (yep, there’s a movie for this as well!)
So, which book club will your kids be doing first? Let me know!
