National Days to Celebrate in September with Kids!
We all know about the standard national holidays in September, but what about those unique, sometimes off-the-wall national days to celebrate in September? As a homeschooling family, including the national days to celebrate in September in our daily activities make for some pretty fun & educational moments!
Why Include National Days to Celebrate in September?
Listen, I know we all have a lot on our plates already. I mean, not only are homeschooling parents responsible for taking care of all the educational aspects, but we also have to take care of planning extracurricular activities, life skills, and…oh yeah…we can’t forget to socialize our kids.
Oh, my goodness. I swear my kids have more socialization opportunities now than they ever did when they were in public school.
I digress.
Why is including the National Days to celebrate in September worth consideration? If you ask me, while these daily holidays are often considered to be silly, they can actually end up being super educational and can result in the creation of awesome family memories!
Honestly, there’s so much going on in the world that’s just plain depressing and anxiety-inducing. If there’s an opportunity to celebrate something every day, even if it’s something as silly as National Video Games Day, we’re gonna do it!
Include National Days in your homeschooling days because they’ll make life exciting, give you & the kids something to smile about, and because they do have educational value!
What about the other September Holidays?
Choosing to include the September National Days in your homeschool days just means there will be more opportunities for celebrating!
There are plenty of ways to include the National Days alongside your Labor Day lessons, Fall Equinox activities, and any other end-of-summer & beginning-of-fall unit studies!
How to Celebrate the National Days
There are quite literally hundreds of National Days just chompin’ at the bit to be celebrated every year. How the heck are we supposed to include all of them?
The simple answer? You don’t.
Lucky for you, I’ve spent hours upon hours combing the internet for the best, most kid-friendly National Days to celebrate in September (and beyond). I’ve compiled them all onto a list and have created a number of resources you can use for an entire year of celebrating!

National Days to Celebrate in September Writing Prompts
For some reason, writing prompts seem to get a bad rap in the homeschooling world. Have you noticed that? Like, people think writing prompts are just busy work or don’t have any educational value.
Um. I’m on the opposite end of that spectrum. When I create writing prompts, I make sure they’re going to encourage the writers (read: the kids) to think & write creatively, to delve deeper into a subject matter, and to actually look forward to daily writing exercises.
I can’t guarantee the kids will always be thrilled for a writing assignment, but I can tell you that my boys actually look forward to my themed writing prompts because they’re always fun!
My National Days to Celebrate in September writing prompt set is no exception!
The free National Days to Celebrate in September writing prompt set includes the following:
- an entire month’s worth of daily writing prompts
- each page is dated by the month number date (ex. “September 1”), but not the day of the week, so this resource can be used for ANY calendar year.
- 9 “national month” writing prompts
- just in case you come across a national day writing prompt that you’re not jiving with, there are 9 for backup! These are NOT dated, but are month specific
- a blank writing prompt template
- just in case you want to use for other lessons

National Days to Celebrate in September Conversation Cards
I’m all about differentiating learning opportunities whenever possible. When I was a teacher, many of students would struggle with writing – they either had trouble physically writing or they had difficulty with some portion of the writing process.
You know what, though? Just because a child isn’t, for whatever reason, able to complete a writing prompt, doesn’t mean they can’t participate.
Because of this experience, I went ahead and made a conversation-based version of my September writing prompts: National Days to Celebrate in September Conversation Cards!
Instead of having to physically write down an answer to a prompt, the conversation cards present the prompt as a conversation starter. The conversation cards are a great option for families that either aren’t able to complete writing prompts, don’t have access to writing utensils (hello, road trips!), or are simply looking for ways to foster conversation and make memories together!
Just as with the September writing prompts, the National Days to Celebrate in September conversation cards include 1 card/prompt per day in September as well as 1 card/prompt for each of the 9 National Month themes.
My kids can confirm: the conversation cards are awesome!

Take your daily celebration a step further by including a hands-on activity each day! These could be included in any sort of extended unit study, as a jumping point for learning about a specific topic, or “just” as a bit of National Day-themed fun.
