National Days to Celebrate in April with Kids!
We’re all familiar with the usual national holidays in April, but what about those quirky, sometimes downright unusual national days that also deserve some attention? As a homeschooling family, these unique days in April offer a great chance to spark creativity and boost literacy in fun ways.
Why Include National Days to Celebrate in April?
Every year, we celebrate holidays in April such as April Fools’ Day and Easter. Those can be two pretty big (and super fun) holidays, so many of you are likely already making plans to celebrate with the family…or play friendly pranks on family!
With everything on your schedule, you might wonder why you should consider celebrating National Days in April. These days give you—and the kids—a bit of daily joy. In a world brimming with negativity, it’s refreshing to celebrate something uplifting!
Adding National Days to your homeschool schedule can spice things up, make everyone smile, and provide educational value.
And, honestly, if I have an excuse to celebrate a holiday like “Dolphin Day,” I’m going to take advantage! I’ve searched for dolphins in the ocean as long as I can remember. We’ve even seen them on a few of our family cruises!
Plus, National Ellis Island Family History Day on April 17? I visited Ellis Island in 1996 and, ever since, have been interested in learning all things regarding ancestry, early-America immigration. It’s just SO interesting!
How to Celebrate the National Days?
Each year, countless National Days beg to be celebrated! But how do we squeeze them all into our busy lives?
Honestly, we can’t.
Don’t stress about it! I’ve spent hours surfing the interwebs to find the most fun National Days for kids that you can enjoy in April and beyond.
Even better? I’ve put together a handy list and crafted resources to keep the celebrations going all year.

National Days to Celebrate in April Writing Prompts
Writing prompts often get a bad reputation among homeschoolers, right? Many people think they’re just busywork with little educational value. Ugh.
I see it differently. When I design writing prompts, my aim is to spark kids’ imagination, encourage them to explore topics more deeply, and make them eager for their writing activities.
Sure, not every task will be the most exciting, but my boys always look forward to my themed prompts because they always either end up learning something new or laughing a lot!
In April, I love having my kids kick off our homeschool day with writing prompts. It’s a fun start that doesn’t have the pressure of right or wrong and it really sets them up nicely for the rest of the activities for the day.
I’ve created a free printable set with prompts for the entire month, which makes things super easy. I just print them all out at once, and we’re set for a smooth and enjoyable activity.

The National Days to Celebrate in April writing prompt set includes the following:
- an entire month’s worth of daily writing prompts
- each page is dated by the month number date (ex. “April 1”), but not the day of the week, so this resource can be used for ANY calendar year.
- 9 “national month” writing prompts
- just in case you come across a national day writing prompt that you’re not jiving with, there are 9 for backup! These are NOT dated, but are month specific
- a blank writing prompt template
- just in case you want to use for other lessons
- a printable with all of the National Days to Celebrate in April that we’ve included as well as 9 National Month themes we’ve included (just want that printable? I’ll share it soon!)
- a journal cover
- plenty of space for doodles and personalization, there’s even a spot for your child/student to write their name to claim the writing prompt journal as their own.
The best part? If your kids enjoy the writing prompts for the national days in April, I’m pretty sure they’d enjoy writing prompts for national days to celebrate all year long!

National Days to Celebrate in April Conversation Cards
I always aim to provide a variety of learning experiences whenever I can. When I was a teacher, many of my students had difficulties with writing. Some struggled with the act itself, while others got stuck at different points in the process.
What I believe is that, even if a student can’t complete a writing task for some reason, they shouldn’t be left out.
This led me to create an alternative to the typical April writing prompts: National Days to Celebrate in April Conversation Cards!
These cards focus on conversation instead of writing, making them perfect for families who find writing difficult, don’t have writing tools available (like when they’re traveling for learning!), or just want to have more meaningful talks and make memories together.
Just like the April writing prompts, these conversation cards have a daily prompt for April and explore the nine National Month themes.
My kids can tell you: these conversation cards are a big hit!
