Finding a geography curriculum that goes beyond memorizing maps and capitals can be a challenge, especially for high school students. Finding a geography curriculum that does this while making daily lessons meaningful, memorable, and fun? Well, that’s near impossible to find…until now.
If you’ve been searching for a hands-on homeschool geography course that helps teens understand the world, its people, and how everything is connected, Master Books has a brand new option worth exploring.
The new World Geography and Cultures curriculum from Master Books is designed for students in grades 9-12 and provides a full year of geography study that can count as one high school credit. The course combines traditional geography concepts with cultural studies, helping students gain a broader understanding of the world around them.
My boys and I are super excited to be including this high school world geography curriculum in our homeschool days this year. What stood out about this curriculum & made it awesome enough too earn a coveted spot in our homeschool day? Let’s chat!

About This High School Geography Curriculum
The complete World Geography and Cultures set includes both a student textbook and a teacher guide, making it as open-and-go as they come! The consumable teacher guide contains:
- a 180-day schedule spread out over two semesters
- daily comprehension and critical thinking worksheets
- map activities
- (optional) enrichment projects
- an answer key
Although the teacher guide is a bound paperback book, each page is perforated and 3-hole-punched making it super easy to tear out the daily pages and later store them in a 3-ring binder.
The student text, also a bound paperback book, features gorgeous full-color photographs, maps, informational charts, and engaging text. The pages are not perforated or 3-hole-punched, instead encouraging students to use the publication as a true textbook. Rather than simply presenting (seemingly boring) facts, this world geography curriculum instead encourages students to explore how geography influences culture, government, economics, history, and everyday life.
If your student may be college-bound, rest assured, this high school curriculum meets or exceeds the geography expectations of most 4-year colleges. This Master Books World Geography and Cultures curriculum is an excellent choice for ALL high school-age students, no matter their plans after completing their homeschool education.
What Students Will Learn
Throughout this 1-year course, students will work learn about the populated continents of Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Australia and Oceania by first learning the basics of geography:
- Pangea & Plate Tectonics
- Different Types of Maps
- Geography & the Economy
- Culture & Geography
- Geography & Religion
- Earth’s Oceans
Afterwards, students will spend the remainder of the year:
- developing map-reading and geography skills
- studying major world regions
- learning about climates, landforms, natural resources, and ecosystems
- exploring diverse cultures & groups
- examining how geography affects trade, government, and daily life
- investigating real-world issues from a biblical worldview
- building critical thinking skills through comprehension questions, discussion opportunities, and extension activities.
Each lesson has the same 5 components, allowing students to consistently learn & know what’s expected of them while receiving a well-rounded education:
- an introduction of the regional countries through a country overview & bullet points
- a focus on prominent physical features of the region
- a focus on human geography
- a focus on religion, social issues, & key historical events
- additional interesting features of the region
Christian Worldview Approach
While the general geographical & cultural learning activities within this world geography curriculum are already top notch, Master Books made it even more meaningful by including opportunities for students to learn within the context of a Christian worldview. My favorite part about this? Master Books managed to include faith in a way that feels natural.
A few examples:
- While learning about the Nile River, students will read text discussing how the Bible refers to the Nile River as the River of Egypt
- “Prayer Points” are included in the final activities of grouped regions, encouraging students to “thank, pray, ask, pray” for specifics in each region
- descriptions of Christian aid projects in progress in various regions
- While learning about the Gobi Desert, the example of the Bactrian camel is provided as an example of an animal God created to survive both extreme heat and cold. Cool!
Throughout the curriculum, students are encouraged to view the world as God’s creation while learning about the people & places that make up our planet.
Independent Learning
My friend, if you’re reading this review, it likely means we’re at a similar point in life – our babies are growing up! How my tiny baby now towers over me surprises me everyday, but the high school years are here and I’m just happy that we have the option of homeschooling.
While there are plenty of opportunities for group discussion and learning through this high school curriculum, this Master Books curriculum was designed for teens to complete independently!
The text is written and organized in a way that makes it easy for teens to take responsibility for their daily lessons. It’s not “too wordy” and all of the coursework is broken up into manageable sections, allowing our kids to complete their lessons in about 45 minutes a day.
Being a parent of multiple kids, I can also attest to the chaos that can ensue when trying to homeschool kids of various skill levels. You should’ve seen me our first year of homeschooling – I tried to 1:1 teach every single lesson and was burned out in no time. Shout out to Master Books for creating this curriculum to be completed independently, saving homeschool parents from unnecessary stress!

My Favorite Parts about this World Geography Curriculum
This year, we’re including more Master Books curricula in our homeschool than not…and for good reason.
Christian Worldview
I’m going to be honest with you – I still consider myself to be sort of a new-ish Christian. My life has been…interesting. I did not grow up with religion, but rather fully found it after one of my students passed away. He absolutely loved going to church…I learned so much about life from him!
I was baptized shortly after my first child was born and, without getting too deep, let’s just say things have been touch & go since then. We’ve attended church services here and there, but the choas of parenting without a local village seemed to take up too much bandwidth. I was exhausted (my husband, no doubt, was exhausted too, but…I’m the one writing the article here, y’know) and just could not add one more “thing” to my plate.
Over the past year, we’ve started attending a local church on a fairly regular basis and have been including faith-based discussions and such in our daily conversations. Baby steps, but still.
That being said, one of my favorite parts about Master Books is that they include opportunities to learn and grown in faith that seem natural and not forced. I love that this world geography curriculum includes nods to the Bible, suggestions of prayers to say for the various regions, and encourages students to view the world as God designed it.

Immersive Experience
You already know that I am ALL for making learning as meaningful, memorable, and fun as possible. When it comes to including Master Books World Geography and Cultures in our days, that means we’re going to take advantage of as many supplemental activities as possible.
Think about it – when learning about geography and culture, there are many opportunities to make a lesson memorable by:
- making regional recipes
- listening to regional music
- learning a regional dance
- watching videos about regional landmarks…and so much more!
I have raised my boys to be foodies and cannot wait to scope out some new-to-us recipes to try at the end of a unit study. My boys also enjoy watching documentaries so you know we’ll be watching videos about all the different festivals, landforms, and such.
Lesson Plans
I’ve mentioned this before – I do not like lesson planning. It was my least favorite part of teaching in a public school and it continues to be my least favorite part of homeschooling. Ew. I’d much rather be teaching or learning alongside my boys.
That being said, I LOVE that this world geography curriculum (and all Master Books curriculum we’ve used thus far) come complete with lesson plans. All I need to do is open my teacher guide, figure out which day it is, and then hand my kids the worksheets and their text. They make it so easy! So stress-free! Love!
Homeschool Travel
You may also know that we love to travel. Travel offers so many learning opportunities and I so appreciate that I’ve been able to take my kids on so many travel adventures both near and far.
But…travel can also be expensive and so time consuming. We don’t always have the means to spare, you know? By learning about the various regions of the world while completing a variety of activities, it’s almost like the kids get to take virtual field trips every day!
As a bonus, when we do have the time and means to travel more, we’ll already be well-versed in the geography and cultures of the world…we’ll already have a good idea of where we want to visit!
Win win!

Answer Key
An answer key? What a silly thing to appreciate about a homeschool curriculum, right?
Um. Wrong. I’ve seen some homeschool curriculum companies that put the Answer Key in the back of the student text. Not Master Books! Nope. This World History and Cultures curriculum has the Answer Key in the back of the Teacher Guide where I can easily access it and my children cannot.
I’m not saying I don’t trust my kids, but I’m also not saying I don’t don’t trust my kids…especially when it comes to assignments. We’ve had an experience or two, I will say that.
A Full, Quality Curriculum
Listen, I’m brand new to teaching a high school course. That’s not to say that, without the help of quality homeschooling materials like curriculum from Master Books I cannot teach high school, but…I SO appreciate that the authors of this World History and Cultures curriculum made sure to create a FULL course.
When my kids have completed this curriculum, they’ll have a high school geography credit! They’ll be one step closer to fulfilling the state requirements to graduate high school and apply to college (if they choose).
