If you’re a homeschool parent, you probably wear about ten hats before breakfast. Teacher, chef, referee, taxi driver, and somewhere in there, you may also want to include some time for the kids to grow in their faith.

That desire is absolutely beautiful, but in reality…it can be a bit messy. Especially if you’re new-ish to incorporating Bible studies into your homeschool days! Long Bible workbooks, extra prep, and crafts that need fifty bajillion supplies usually end up being pushed to the side. Wonderful intentions, of course, but the overwhelm can be a bit much.

That’s where a simple Bible study journal for kids can help!

In this post I’ll walk you through what a kids Bible study journal is, why a printable version works so well for homeschool families, what’s inside my free printable journal, and how to use it in a normal, real-life homeschool day without adding stress.

What Is a Bible Study Journal for Kids and Why Use This Free Printable?

A Bible study journal for kids is a set of simple pages that guide children to respond to Scripture. Instead of only hearing a story, they write, draw, and think about what God says. It turns Bible time from “Sit still and listen” into “Let’s talk with God and notice what He’s saying.”

My free printable journal is designed for busy homeschool homes. You can print a few pages or a whole stack, then slip them into a folder or binder. No shipping, no waiting, no expensive workbook that you feel pressured to finish.

It also works with any Bible plan you already use. Reading through a Gospel? Using a boxed homeschool Bible curriculum? Just reading one Psalm a day together? The prompts are open enough to fit all of that.

Because it is printable, it grows with your family. Younger kids can draw and dictate while you write. Older kids can fill out every section on their own. You can print the same favorite page again and again, for multiple kids and multiple years, without buying a new book each time.

Simple way for kids to interact with Scripture, not just listen

When kids journal, they move from passive to active.

Picture your child hearing the story of David and Goliath, then writing one short line, “God is bigger than my fears,” and drawing a picture of a giant and a boy with a slingshot. That simple act helps the truth stick.

Journaling helps kids:

  • Focus for a few extra minutes
  • Remember what they heard
  • Make the story feel personal

Some days their response might be one sentence. Other days it might be a whole page of pictures. Both count.

Why a free printable journal fits real homeschool life

Homeschool days are rarely tidy. Someone spills the cereal, the toddler hides the math book, and you are out of ink on the day a workbook arrives.

(BTW…Epson EcoTank for the win…I’m just saying)

A printable journal gives you margin. You can:

  • Print one page or a week’s worth at a time
  • Reprint if someone wants a fresh start
  • Use the same file for all your kids

Pages slip into a 3-ring binder or a simple folder. You can grab it for morning time, car schooling, or bedtime reading. It can stand alone, or you can pair it with your Bible curriculum, a children’s Bible, or family devotions without changing anything else.

How to Use the Kids Bible Study Journal in Your Homeschool Day

You certainly do not need a perfect routine to start. Think of the journal as a tool you can plug into what you already do.

Simple daily routines that actually work for busy homeschool families

Here are a few easy ways to use the journal.

Morning basket: Read a short passage aloud at the table. Then give everyone 5 to 10 minutes to fill out one daily page. Little ones can draw while you help them talk through the questions.

Quiet time for older kids: During nap time or independent work, older children read their own passage or a few verses you assign. They fill in the page on their own, then share one thing they wrote when you regroup.

Evening family time: After dinner, read a story together. Let kids bring their journals to the couch and draw or write while you talk. At the end, each child shares one sentence or picture they want to remember.

Start with two or three days a week. Once it feels natural, you can add more, but you do not have to.

Keeping the journal Christ centered, not just another school subject

It is easy to turn any good tool into “just another assignment.” I have done it too.

To keep this time Christ centered:

  • Remind your kids that the point is to know Jesus, not to fill every line.
  • Ask open questions like, “What did this show you about God?” or “How does this help you trust Him today?”
  • Share your own short reflection once in a while so they see that you are learning too.

Close journal time with a simple, shared prayer. Something like, “Jesus, thank You for Your Word. Help us remember what we read today. Amen.”
