Homeschooling in April

April is a fabulous month to breathe some new energy into your homeschooling days. The world is blooming once more, the weather is warming up, and there are seemingly endless opportunities to include nature studies, holidays, and hands-on activities into your lesson plans. It you’ve been thinking about switching things up this year – or next – now’s the time!

Incorporating Spring Themes into Curriculum

Spring is an ideal season for creative and immersive learning experiences. April is practically begging you to bring themes like gardening, wildlife, exploration, and environmental awareness into your homeschool days. Imagine the hands-on science lessons your kids can experience by planting seeds, studying pollinators, or observing the growth of plants – it’s learning made visible.

Consider these educational benefits:

• Gardening: Kids can learn patience, responsibility, and the science of plant life (like clover!) while gardening. Plus, it’s a great way to practice measuring and documenting grown every day.
• Wildlife: Head outdoors to identify birds (like the bald eagle!) or track animals in your area. Journaling these observations is a great way to boost writing & research skills! Depending on your local temperatures, April could also be a great month to start raising caterpillars into butterflies!
• Environmental Awareness: April’s traditionally mild temperatures are perfect for outdoor environmental projects, like creating a compost bin or organizing a small cleanup activity in your neighborhood.
• Weather: Y’know, because “April showers bring May flowers!” Even though the official start of hurricane season isn’t until June, there’s plenty of opportunities to study, and prepare for, weather in April.

Celebrating Key April Holidays

One of the best things about April is its lineup of holidays and observances that naturally spark curiosity, creativity, and engagement!

• National Days in April: A special holiday to celebrate every single day in April? You know it! National Days in April can be so much fun to celebrate! From PB&J Day to Dolphin Day to Richter Scale Day…there’s something new to learn each and every day!
• Earth Day: Teach kids about sustainability and environmental care through DIY recycling crafts, playing Recycle Mania!, coloring the free Earth Day bookmarks in the Printable Playground, and even analyzing energy use at home (maybe they’ll even stop leaving the lights on?!). Even taking part in your local Earth Day activities & events can be educational and inspiring.

• Easter (or Spring Holidays): Go beyond the traditional egg hunts by incorporating themes about the history of Easter or fostering creativity through themed crafts like Easter Coloring Bookmarks (in the Printable Playground!) or egg decorating.
• Arbor Day: Plant a tree or explore history of forests to connect the kids with the environment while homeschooling in April. It’s a tactile experience that could spark curiosity about conservation!
• Poetry Month: April has many National Month themes…and “Poetry Month” is one of them! This month, take some time to learn about poets & poetry. You could even have the kids create their own spring-themed haiku!

I swear, I could go on and on about all the different holidays to celebrate in April (and beyond!).

Balancing Fun & Education

When I was a teacher, that itch to take my students outdoors to learn would always reappear as soon as the spring season started. There’s just something about being outside when the sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and the flowers are blooming, you know? Of course, we know teachers can’t always just switch lessons from indoors to outdoors without getting permission from administration & such?

Now that we’re homeschooling? We’re the only people that need to give approval for learning outside! Sweet!

Homeschooling in April is definitely a time when the kids are itching to get outside after months of being cooped up during winter weather so…might as well go outside!

• Start Outdoors: Kick off the day with an educational outdoor activity, like some nature journaling, spring writing prompts, or a walk in the forest. This allows kids to expend some energy while diving into observation-based learning…they’re learning without even realizing it!
• Mix Formats: Use playful activities (like scavenger hunts) to reinforce core skills like math & language arts. For example, you could toss beanbags while solving math problems or learn about the placement of the planets in the solar system with driveway chalk art!
• Plan Downtime: Fun should totally be balanced with calm. After a morning of lively morning activities, let the kids unwind with a story or some quiet journaling. If you’re lucky, they may even take a nap (when pigs fly, right?!).

By inviting the fun side of spring while staying consistent with your typical homeschooling academic activities, you’ll create a rhythm that works for both you and the kids. April isn’t just another month – it’s an opportunity for memorable experiences designed for learning & growth!

Planning Ahead

While there are plenty of activities & events to think about and plan for this year…what about next year? For many homeschoolers, even if they are homeschooling year-round, April seems to be one of those months when we take a moment to step back and think about the plan for next year. Maybe your curriculum isn’t quite working for your family’s schedule? Maybe the kids would rather learn Spanish instead of French? Maybe you’re looking for a new homeschool co-op?
