End of the Homeschool Year Traditions Your Kids Will Remember (Free Printable!)

I don’t know about you but, every year around March and April, the boys and I start feeling antsy. We’re ready to start spending more time outside and less time on the homeschool lessons.

I can’t be alone, right?

The kids have worked hard during the “school” year, making sure they’re getting all their assignments completed (and then some). I’ve worked hard schlepping them back and forth to extracurricular activities, co-op, the library, on field trips…while staying on top of teaching them lessons.

We’re all tired. And, while we’re all ready to take an extended break when all the assignments for the year are complete, it’s super important that we close out the year with a tradition or two. Not only do they help us to celebrate “the end,” but they help the kids to see the progress they’ve made, feel proud of their efforts, & mark the official start of summer!

Plus, we already have traditions for our other favorite holidays…what’s the harm adding a few more? Keep reading – I’m sharing some fun, low-stress end of the homeschool year traditions you may want to add to your schedule, a no-prep printable, and a limited-time giveaway opportunity!

Celebrating the End of the Homeschool Year

There are so many ways you could celebrate, but chat a bit about some of our favorite end of the homeschool year traditions.

Make a Special Breakfast or Dessert

Start the last day of homeschool for the year with something special. My boys love making this recipe for homemade pancakes and eating them with…no, not syrup…chocolate chips! What a treat, right?! If we choose to celebrate with a special dessert instead (or do both!), we’ll usually make our favorite chocolate chip cookies.

The goal isn’t perfection. You certainly don’t have to make something homemade, you really just want to mark the closing of a big accomplishment – another year of learning!

Let the Kids Choose the Day’s Activity

If you think you’re going to spend the last day of homeschooling watching educational documentaries or taking an online art class, you’re wrong! I mean, unless that’s what the kids want to do! While some homeschool groups will host a field day or end-of-the-year bash, sometimes I’ll just give the kids the option to choose a special activity.

Whether the kids choose a visit to the movies, a trip for ice cream, or a day at a museum, giving the kids the option of deciding the activity is a great way to add a sense of excitement to the final day.

Take a “Last Day of Homeschool” Photo

When the boys were in public school, I would always make sure to take a photo of them on the first and last days of school. It’s bittersweet to look back on the photos. The first day, they’d usually be wearing some “nicer than usual” outfit, sporting a fresh haircut & a big smile. On the last day, they’d be wearing an everyday outfit with scuffed sneakers…and likely an inch or two taller than the first day.

All this to say – the first and last day of school photos shouldn’t stop just because you pulled your kids from public school (or never sent them in the first place). Pick a spot in your yard, or maybe visit a favorite playground, and snap a photo. You could even have the kids hold up a “last day of homeschool” sign if you want!

They may fuss about getting their photo taken, especially as they enter the tween/teen years, but the effort to snap a photo is 100% worth it!

Before finishing up the homeschool year, take a minute for your kids to reflect on everything they learned & experienced. My “My Year in Review” printable can help with just this!
