Best Learning Games & Worksheets for Homeschoolers

No surprise, my kids learn best when their homeschool activities allow them to have fun! Including learning games, worksheets, and hands-on activities are just a few ways I’m able to make learning meaningful, memorable, and fun for them.

Now that we’re in our 6th year of homeschooling (holy moly – how time flies!), I’ve had plenty of experience in the “great search for educational materials” for my kids. Some searches have proven futile, only resulting in wasted time, money, and frustrated kids. It’s really annoying when that happens, you know? My husband and I work hard for our income and need to be wise in how our resources are used.

A few searches, though, have resulted in the discovery of educational materials that are actually worth the time, money, and effort. Thank goodness for that!

You guys. I’ve seen multiple recommendations for Education.com in various homeschool social media groups for years. For some reason, I never really gave their resources a chance…until now.

What’s So Great About Education.com?

Honestly, I’m kind of kicking myself that it took me this long to check out Education.com. I can only assume that, when we were first starting to homeschool, I was just so overwhelmed with all the options that I just glazed over this resource.

It would’ve been SO nice for “6-years-ago-me” to know what “today-me” knows! How lucky are you to get this insight now?!

Even in the month or so that I’ve been using it with my own kids, it’s been a total game-changer. I can only imagine how different our homeschooling experience could’ve been if I had started using the resources from education.com 6 years ago.

There’s no use dwelling on the past, though. We’ll be moving forward by including Education.com in our daily activities and I’m so excited for that…and that I now get to share this fabulous resource with you!

While many may see Education.com as a “printable website” (not gonna lie, I was once one of those people), it’s really SO much more. Our Favorite Features of Education.com

A Good Balance

As a child of the 90s, I have many memories of completing worksheets during my time in public education. As much as I may have complained back then, I am very aware of how writing and completing hands-on activities can help with understanding, and retaining, information.

As a parent of a tween & a teen, I’m also very aware of the amount of technology my kids are growing up with. Sometimes it can be a little much, but much of it can be super educational and…honestly…technology isn’t disappearing anytime soon, so the kids might as well learn to use it well!

When it comes to Education.com, I feel their Premium Membership offers the best of both worlds – plenty of hands-on learning with a side of digital learning games & fun.

Lesson Planning

Even as a teacher, lesson planning just wasn’t fun for me. I wanted to teach, not spend a ton of time planning lessons & making sure they covered state standards. Ew, boring!

I totally love when homeschool programs include some sort of lesson planning into their offerings. Education.com actually does a wonderful job with this!

With pre-made lesson plans, it’s super easy for me to assign a series of activities to my kids…in any subject!

My favorite part of the lessons, though, has to be the “Roly Recommends” section. I’m pretty sure my kids love that section the best, too. Roly is a character in the Education.com world and, in his section, he has pre-made lessons that focus on upcoming holidays, seasons, etc. The fun stuff!

Since my kids and I are finishing up a long-distance move from Georgia to Florida, I wanted to make this stressful time as educationally fun as possible. Before heading up to our Georgia home to pack everything up, I printed out 2 Halloween-themed packets of middle school worksheets from the “Roly Recommends” section.

In between all the chaos of moving (we had movers, thank goodness!), the boys and I would sit on the patio & get our work done together. While they worked on Halloween themed logic puzzles, writing prompts, language mazes, and number grids with hidden images, they were able to have fun and not be stressed about moving.

Funny story – one of the writing prompts was about going trick-or-treating with friends & suddenly realizing all the lights are off in the neighborhood. What would they do?

Instead of writing about finding another neighborhood to trick or treat in, or using a phone flashlight to check for candy, my 11-year-old writes “so my friends and I go back home to watch a movie.”

Here I am thinking I’d be trying to figure out another way to add weight to my candy haul and this kid’s happy to just watch a movie!

Record-Keeping

You’ve likely read some variation of this on my blog before – I don’t find record keeping to be enjoyable at all. Yes, it’s a required part of homeschooling…if not for state reporting purposes, it should at least be done for personal records.

I absolutely love when homeschooling resources, online or otherwise, offer an easy way for parents to keep track of records. It takes a weight off my shoulders, you know?

Education.com makes this SUPER easy! When I assign an activity to my kids, they’re able to mark it off as completed afterwards. If it’s a digital activity, I’m even able to see the score.

Multiple Grade Levels

As a homeschool mom educating 2 kids of different ages and different levels, I appreciate that Education.com offers activities created with grades PreK-8 in mind. I also appreciate that, even if I “label” my child as being in a certain grade level in my parent dashboard, I’m able to assign them worksheets, learning games, or hands-on activities in any grade level.

Learning Games

No surprise, my kids really enjoyed the games! They both really seem to be into improving their typing skills – a good thing since so much of the world is digital nowadays. With Education.com, the typing games do focus on building fluency, but it’s done in a fun way and not the boring “asdf asdf asdf” way I learned in the 90s. Instead, kids get to learn interesting facts about animals, foods, and other fun facts by typing what they read. Isn’t that cool?!

My 11-year-old is especially fond of sharing random bits of information with his friends and family, so he was more than happy to complete these typing lessons! You should’ve heard him talking on the phone during my husband’s drive home from work “Daddy, did you know…..yep, it was in my typing class today!”
