The Homeschool Curriculum that Makes Math Fluency FUN!

Homeschool math time used to be a part of our day that could flip fast. One minute, my kid would be totally fine. The next minute, the tears would be flowing over a basic math problem. This wouldn’t be because the lesson was hard, but because the math facts weren’t ready when they were needed. It felt like trying to put together a DIY bookshelf without having the instructions and having a hammer instead of a screwdriver: frustrating & impossible.

If math fluency is slowing your kids down, they’re not alone. And, while I’m not really a fan of the the idea of homeschoolers being “behind” their public or private school peers and needing to “catch up,” I will 100% agree that a solid understanding of the basic math facts is an absolute must. The good news is, you don’t have to choose between “fun” and “real learning” when it comes to helping your kids achieve math fluency. You can definitely build fluency in a way that feels light, quick, and doable.

Plainly said, “math fluency” means your child can answer facts & basic skills quickly, accurately, and confidently. Achieving this goal can fit into all sorts of homeschool styles & schedules and, believe it or not…I know a way of achieving math fluency that won’t result in tears!

Math Fluency in Grades 1 – 4

Before I became a special education teacher, I was considering going to school to become an elementary school teacher. Why? Well, it seems like the elementary grades are so much fun. They’re still learning through play, get to learn through games, and…still got to have recess! And, while an elementary-level education can often be viewed as “fun” or “cute,” it’s actually filled with important stepping stones to ensure successful learning and understanding in the future.

Having a solid foundation in fluency skills like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division is incredibly important for our kids long-term success in regards to math. Not only because they’ll be able to better understand more complex concepts as they move into algebra, calculus, and/or trigonometry, but because they’re essential for basic life skills like:

• budgeting
• time management
• cooking & baking

It’s also worth mentioning, even though the IXL Fluency Zone was created with kids in grades 1-4 in mind, there is nothing stopping users from having their older (or younger) kids from playing the games. There’s nothing wrong with having a 6th grader play the games to reinforce their multiplication skills just as it’s totally ok for a kindergarten-age child to start beefing up their addition and subtraction skills using the Fluency Zone.

Fluency Made Fun!

I remember spending hours practicing math flashcards growing up. Over and over again, I’d read the math fact out loud, do the math in my head, and speak the answer out loud before turning the card over to check my answer. While flashcards can still be beneficial, they most certainly are not fun. When a child is struggling with comprehension, they could actually end up being harmful. The IXL Fluency Zone makes achieving math fluency fun through a number of activities:

Raceway Challenges

Think classic arcade car racing games combined with math facts. Each grade level currently has 6-10 different raceway challenge options, so kids have multiple opportunities to be challenged while also honing their driving skills (I’m kidding…no driving skills required).

Within each raceway challenge, there are options to:

• turn the sound on/off: an excellent option if sounds can be overwhelming or kids are working in a space requiring quiet
• show or hide the timer: a BIG deal in our household – my kids always say the time countdowns cause them more stress than help
• turn on/off the animation: especially helpful for kids that are on the autism spectrum, have adhd, or “just” get distracted by movement on the screen

Fluency Zone Games

By playing grade & skill-level specific games, the kids learn without even realizing it. We’re talking silly games with names like:

• Gobble Squabble: a Thanksgiving-themed game to practice solving math problems to avoiding hungry chefs
• Math Magician: a paint-by-number style game allowing kids to color mythical scenes while answering math problems
• Math Quiz: a gameshow-style game complete with cheers from the audience
• Fuzz Bugs Factory: a click & drag game featuring cute “fuzz bugs”

Math Fluency Worksheets

Yes, I know some people aren’t fans of worksheets but hear me out: there is proof that incorporating writing into math studies can be beneficial in regards to academic achievement. IXL has taken this into consideration by providing fun, low-pressure fluency worksheets that can be completed by the kids. Whether you choose to print them out or use digitally, I definitely suggest including the worksheet practice into math activities.

Fluency Skills

Just as the comprehensive IXL platform has broken learning materials down into digestible, recordable sections for all of the grade levels & subjects, the Skills section of the Fluency Zone includes math fluency comprehension activities. These activities are a little less “bells & whistles” than the fun games & racing games, but still serve an important purpose: to help build math fluency!

Why the Fluency Zone is Awesome

You guys, I wish the IXL Fluency Zone had been around when my kids were in the early elementary stages. Even though my kids are now in middle school, I will (and have) still have my kids work on their basic math skills using this program.

Why? Don’t they feel like babies working on elementary skills? Isn’t that too young for them?

Um…no. I have two simple reasons:

1. We already have the full IXL membership: If IXL has a program that can help my kids, I’m going to take advantage of it.
2. There’s no such thing as knowing too fluent in math: Like I said before, the basic skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division are the building blocks of a solid understanding of math. If my 14 year old has fun doing the 4th grade multiplication games in the Fluency Zone, so be it. I would much rather my kids find math to be exciting & fun than boring and difficult. I’m all for reinforcing math skills!

Busy Schedules

While IXL can certainly provide a full math education, I love that learning through the Fluency Zone works with the busy schedules so many homeschool families have. Since many of the activities last only a minute or two, there’s plenty of time to squeeze in a trip around the Raceway or be a Math Magician in between activities and even on-the-go.

Makes Math Fun

Why have the kids complete boring activities when IXL has the super fun, super engaging, super encouraging Fluency Zone? I would much rather have my kids compete against each other for the “best time” around the Raceway Challenge than be miserable completing dry, basic math worksheets.
