What's one of my favorite things about homeschooling, you ask?

I mean, you didn't ask, but I'm going to answer! 😉

We have fun doing our regular, somewhat scheduled activities, but...what really makes me glad we chose to homeschool? The accidental learning!

Today, the boys were working on learning common & proper nouns. We were playing a little game I made up, everyone was having fun. It was a great time.

Then, my youngest found a tissue paper heart that we used for a project (more on that soon 😍) and started rubbing in on the table.

A la "monkey see, monkey do," my oldest started doing the same.

They discovered static electricity! They "magically" made the tissue paper "balance" under their fingers, had it "stick" to the table. It was awesome.

I just love when learning happens naturally, don't you?

Oh, and I also love when we get to stay in our pjs for the day 😆

Did you know that @aopsbeastacademy has a website chock full of free, off-screen math games for your kids?! I'm talking hands-on, engaging games that are actually fun AND they help to reinforce math skills of kids ages 4-11.

My boys and I have been playing a bunch of games from the Beast Academy Playground website. Every game is easy to set up, requires only a few common household items, and are so fun that kids don't even realize their working on math.

Christmas in Philly is magical 💜

One of our favorite family Christmas traditions has been spending a day in the city seeing all the sights. We take the train in from South Jersey, see the light show at @macys, walk around Dicken's Village, walk around @loveparkphilly, see the show at the @comcast Center... and enjoy lunch at @rdgterminalmkt or @theboursephilly.

We had to skip this tradition in 2020. It broke our hearts to do so, but safety comes first.

Yesterday, though? We got to experience Christmas in Philly again! We're still exhausted from all the walking, but what a magical day it was! We got to see all our favorite attractions AND the boys even wrote a letter to Santa!

If you'll be in a Macy's store soon, definitely look for the red mailbox! For every letter placed in the mailbox, @makeawishamerica will receive a monetary donation. In addition to doing good, this activity will also result in some lovely Christmas memories 💙💜

Never underestimate the education that can result from being in the kitchen!

Multiplying and splitting recipes = math

Science with Skittles!

We've been so lucky to participate in a local science group this fall. Every week, we all meet at a playground and one of the moms teaches a lesson. Today? Science with Skittles.

Basically, you arrange your Skittles in a circle on a plate (we used paper today). Then, pour some water inside the circle...just enough to cover the plate. The water then dissolves the sugar coating on the Skittles and the water is dyed! It turned out so pretty!

His name is Matthew, but he calls himself "Mathematical Matthew" so, when it comes time to do math during our homeschool days, he's usually pretty excited to get started! (Thank goodness!)

If you've seen the blog, you may have seen my article on @ctcmath. We loved it then and it's quite possible that we love it even more now. I swear it's been a lifesaver especially when we're *this* close to celebrating Christmas and NO ONE wants to do any work. 😆 The kids watch the instructional video for each lesson, complete the questions...wham, bam, thank you...CTC Math lol

Do you know how your kids learn best?

Just as I was growing up, my kids learn best through hands-on activities and experiences. This is actually one of the reasons my husband and I made the decision to start homeschooling.

When I was a teacher, I included as many hands-on activities for my students as I could, but, if I'm being honest, they weren't as fun as they could've been.

I was just one teacher with a classroom of kids. There was only so much I could assist and the activity could only take so long because we had to fit all the lessons in for the day.

As a homeschooling mom, though? If my kids are particularly interested in a certain topic and wish to spend all day exploring different possibilities and learning more about the topic...well, that's what we're going to do!

The boys got to make their own parachutes with household art supplies. They tested the differences between using a plastic baggie, a napkin, and a coffee filter. They altered the weight of the "person" by adding and removing beads of different weights and sizes. Not only did they learn, but they had a blast.

And, the activity didn't end there. They ended up making kites and flying them through the playground on a windy day. They crafted figures from pipe cleaners. They got to learn the best way they know how.

Over the past year, I've been finding myself thankful for all the moments and experiences my kids have gotten to have because we switched to homeschooling.

What's one of those experiences I'm most thankful for? Hands down, it has to be the amazing relationship my two boys have.

Sure, they have their disagreements, but they really do look out for each other and help each other out.

This morning, Sam (10 y/o) was helping Matthew (7 y/o) with his math assignment. He was helping him to figure out 3 numbers that add up to 21 and it was just the sweetest moment 💙💜

One of our favorite parts of homeschooling has got to be the focus on life skills. I didn't really learn how to cook until I got married. But my boys? This dude is learning how to make ziti at age 7! Even better? He's absolutely loving being in the kitchen!

What life skills do you focus on with your kids? I'm hoping to get them started cleaning the bathroom next 😉😆

BTW... we keep our ziti super simple. Penne pasta (because the lines on the pasta hold the sauce nicely), ricotta cheese, mozzarella cheese, and marinara sauce. Delish!
