Free Typing Games for Kids: Why KidzType Works so Well for Kids on the Spectrum

Finding free typing games for kids can often be a struggle. It can take forever to find the perfect match for your child…especially if they’re on the autism spectrum. Some games are downright boring while others have an overwhelming amount of features – bright colors, loud sounds, large timers with a countdown?!

Don’t even get me started on the timers!

In this day and age, being a skilled typist is nearly a requirement for everyday communication. For our neurodivergent learners, being able to type fluently can mean the difference between thriving and struggling, between being a social butterfly or not. While there are a number of preferences and likes/dislikes, especially when it comes to kids on the spectrum, when you have a goal of encouraging (and building) typing fluency, the KidzType typing games are definitely worth a try.

What Is KidzType?

KidzType is a free (yes, free!) online platform built with the goal of teaching kids how to type. Through a number of interactive lessons, games, and simple typing drills, kids are able to strengthen their typing skills at their own pace. Think of it as a mix of a homeschool lesson and fun video game – the kids get to practice real keyboard skills, but feel like they’re playing!

Why Typing Can be Helpful for Neurodivergent Learners

As a former special education teacher, and now a homeschooling parent, I’m always on the lookout for tools & curriculum that actually help kids learn without adding extra stress, sensory overload, or a financial burden. Life can already be stressful, overwhelming, and expensive…why would I want homeschooling to be the same, you know?

When I was a teacher, one of my positions was in a self-contained middle school class of kids that were on the autism spectrum. While my students were all unique in their own way, they all had (at least) one thing in common: a need to communicate. Some of my students were nonverbal and often relied on the PECS system and sign language to communicate while others could chat all day, but struggled when it came to producing legible handwriting.

What’s one skill that could help students all across the autism spectrum? You know it – typing!

While typing can help with written communication, is it’s just an alternative to handwriting. It can actually open up opportunities for “new” forms of communication with kids who may struggle with fine-motor coordination, language processing, and even sensory demands (you may have seen the various types of ASMR keyboards on social media?)

Here are a few reasons typing can be especially empowering for kids on the autism spectrum:

Less Fine-Motor Stress

Handwriting asks a lot from small muscles in the fingers and hand. Kids have to control pressure, spacing, and letter shapes all at once. Typing shifts more of the work to bigger muscles in the arms and shoulders, and the keys give clear feedback with every press. For many kids, that feels easier and far less frustrating.

Easier Flow of Ideas

Some kids think quickly, but write slowly, and that process can really wear them down. When they use a keyboard, their fingers can keep up with their thoughts much better. Ideas get onto the screen before they fade, which can boost confidence!

Stronger Support for Different Ways of Communicating

Kids who are minimally verbal, or who just feel more comfortable using written words, often rely on typing. In those cases, the keyboard is not just a school skill, it is a key way to share feelings, needs, and opinions. Typing turns into a bridge that lets them connect with community members, family, and friends.

Comfort in Routine and Repetition

Typing follows patterns. Fingers move in set ways, the keys stay in the same place, and practice can become a steady routine. For many autistic learners, that predictability feels calming and empowering. Resources like KidzType use simple games and repeatable drills, so kids can practice touch typing in a way that feels safe, fun, and familiar.

How KidzType Can Help Kids on the Autism Spectrum

KidzType really does have a lot to offer to all kids, but especially kids on the autism spectrum. What may “just” look like fun games and engaging lessons to us can be especially helpful, and potentially life-changing, to a child that has autism.

Here are some of my favorite features of the KidzType free typing games, especially for kids that are on the spectrum:

• Predictability: KidzType organizes typing lessons and games in clear, consistent stages (home-row keys, then gradually adding more keys). That kind of predictable progression tends to feel more comfortable and less overwhelming. Kids that have autism tend to thrive with routine, structure, and clear expectations – and the KidzType games offer just this!
• Low Sensory Overload: While the graphics within these free typing games for kids can be colorful and cute, they’re not to the point of sensory overload. The animations are simple and the graphics aren’t “loud” and “flashy,” making it easier for kids to stay focused.
• Self-Paced Learning: Quite possibly one of my favorite perks of homeschooling in general, kids are able to control the pace at which they learn how to type with KidzType. They can repeat lessons if they want and can do so as many times as they desire. This can help support emotional regulation and encourage kids to take ownership over their education.
• Communication: Being a fluent typist can level the playing field when it comes to communicating with friends & family members. Typing can allow a non-verbal child the ability to communicate easily with those they desire…and vice versa! How cool is that?

Educational perks aside, the games & lessons on the KidzType platform really are a bunch of fun. My boys and I tried out a number of the activities and we all agreed that we actually enjoyed the typing challenges. My youngest (11 years old) loved the variety of typing games that were themed to racing cars while my oldest (14 years old) enjoyed the fact that the lessons did not contain a countdown clock (can be an annoying feature for many) and that the sounds weren’t loud and obnoxious.
