Free Flag Day Activities for Kids: Printable Worksheets, Reading Passages & Writing Prompts
Looking for meaningful Flag Day activities for kids? Whether you’re homeschooling, teaching in a classroom, or simply looking for an easy way to help your children learn about this important day, a Flag Day activity packet can make learning meaningful, memorable, & fun!
Happening in between Memorial Day and the 4th of July, Flag Day seems to be one of those patriotic holidays that often gets overlooked. Everyone seems so busy finishing up the school year and making plans for the upcoming summer break that they forget about Flag Day.
So, “high fives” to you for including this national holiday in your June plans (or maybe as part of an American History study?)!
Flag Day is observed each year on June 14 and commemorates the adoption of the first official American flag in 1777. While it isn’t a federal holiday, it remains an important opportunity for children (and their adults) to learn about American history, national symbols, and the story behind the Stars and Stripes.
To help families and educators celebrate and include Flag Day in their plans, I’ve created a free Flag Day activity packet designed for upper elementary and middle school students. If combines reading passages, writing prompts, critical thinking, and engaging activities to help kids gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of Flag Day and the American flag.

Why Teach Kids About Flag Day?
Many kids recognize the American flag, but few know the story behind it. Flag Day provides an excellent opportunity to explore questions such as:
- Why was the American flag created?
- What do the stars and stripes represent?
- Why is Flag Day celebrated in June 14?
- Who helped make Flag Day a national observance?
- Why are national symbols important?
Learning about Flag Day helps kids connect with history while developing a greater appreciation of the national symbols they see every day.
What’s Included in the Free Flag Day Activity Packet?
This printable packet goes beyond simple coloring pages. Oh no, we’re making learning (say it with me) meaningful, memorable, and fun! It’s designed to help kids think critically, practice reading comprehension, strengthen writing skills, and learn about the history of the American flag and Flag Day.

Reading Passages & Comprehension Questions
Kids will learn about:
- The history of Flag Day
- Why June 14 was chosen as THE day
- The meaning behind the stars and stripes
- A bit about the evolution of the American flag
- Bernard J. Cigrand and his efforts to establish Flag Day
- Bob Heft getting a B- on his American flag design (what?!)
Each passage is written with upper elementary and middle school students in mind and include comprehension questions to reinforce learning.
Flag Day Writing Prompts
Students will practice multiple styles of writing including:
- Descriptive writing
- Narrative writing
- Persuasive writing
- Informational writing
- Reflective writing
One of my favorite writing activities in the free Flag Day activity packet? The kids are challenged to imagine they are newspaper reporters covering the creation of Flag Day by writing a front-page news article about the event. How fun is that?!

Flag Day Scavenger Hunt
You guys, I’m a sucker for a good scavenger hunt. They let the kids learn without making it feel like learning, you know what I mean? The Flag Day scavenger hunt lets kids search for flags and patriotic symbols in their communities while making observations about where flags are displayed and why these locations may be significant.
It’s activities like these that help connect learning to the real world!
Why Homeschool Families Love Holiday-Themed Learning
Holiday-themed unit studies are a great way to make learning memorable! I mean, why else do you think I have a complete set of National Days to Celebrate writing prompts for you to use in your own homeschool? They’re my favorite! Instead of treating history as a list of dates and facts, students connect lessons to real-world events and traditions.
Flag Day naturally incorporates multiple subjects, including:
- History
- Reading
- Writing
- Geography
- Art
- Critical Thinking
This makes it an excellent addition to your homeschool plans during June!
