It’s important to preserve family history, whether it be through writing down memories in a journal, sharing them through personal conversation, or even by sharing audio visuals with our loved ones. Our stories are truly one-of-a-kind and deserve to be remembered for generations to come.

Why use Family Conversation Cards?

You know those family history books that are often given to grandparents? You know, the “tell me your story, Grandma” type books?

Well, while they have great intentions, it’s been my experience that they’re not often filled out. I don’t know why, but I have a feeling they can bring about a morbid feel. I mean, it’s gotta be depressing to fill a book with answers regarding memories of one’s life.

There’s no real personal connection occurring when putting a pen to paper, making the recording of life memories feel like filling out the in-patient forms when visiting a new doctor’s office. Ew.

Conversation cards, though? They require at least 2 people to complete and don’t necessarily come with the “end of days” feel that the journals often bring.

That’s just my experience. Yours may be different, but I know both sets of my grandparents were gifted the memory books when I was younger and…not one was filled out.

Coincidence? I think not. I don’t blame them one bit.

Anyways, why might using conversation cards to share family history and memories work better than jotting everything down in a notebook?

Well, for one, there’s the power of human connection.

Given the choice, I would much rather have a quality conversation (with prompts provided) to share the stories of my life with my kids. If my kids grandparents were active in their lives, I would certainly prefer them to make personal memories with my kids while chatting about their lives, too!

Tips for using Family Conversation Cards

As soon as you download the set of the family history conversation starters, you’ll be thankful for the minimal amount of preparation required to put them to good use.

To make the conversation starters durable, I definitely suggest printing them out on cardstock paper before laminating. From there, just cut out the individual cards, hole punch each in the top left corner, and keep them together & organized with a binder ring.

After that, they’re ready to be used!

The conversation cards are perfect for informal use during car rides, while flying, or even “just” hanging out on the sofa together!

If you want to document the conversations, you could always use a sound recording app. These are some examples of free sound recording apps:

• Loom (Loom can also record video along with audio)
• Notta
• Easy Voice Recorder (available on Google Play and App Store)

My set of family conversation cards includes 155 conversation starters so I totally suggest taking your time and not rushing through the entire pack of cards. This is meant to provide a bonding experience, so enjoy the moments!

I’m all for spontaneous memory-making, but you may even consider setting aside a specific time or day for going through the cards. Maybe do some themed tea parties with each other or enjoy a beloved family recipe while going through the cards?
