Getting Ready for Election Day
Learning about election day and the whole process of voting for the president can be overwhelming for kids. Heck, teaching about elections can be overwhelming, too! I get it.
When there’s a presidential election coming up, there’s a lot at stake. It can be stressful to figure it all out but it’s important to do our best to make an informed decision…and to teach our kids to do the same. After all, as much as we’d like to keep the kids tiny, they’re bound to grow up and become participating members of society.
To help make learning about election day as stress-free and meaningful for the kids (and you!), I’m happy to share a few activities that could be great to include in your days leading up to “the big day.”

Play an Election Game
Not gonna lie, I didn’t truly learn & understand how votes for presidential candidates really worked until I was well into my 20s…maybe it was because politics didn’t really interest me? Maybe it’s because the extent of my “voting education” was a few weeks of classes in a middle school US History class?
Who knows.
Either way, I’m determined to make sure my kids fully understand the entire voting process well before they come of age to vote.
When I was at the Southeast Homeschool Expo last year, Semper Smart Games had a vendor booth and I ended up buying their Election Night! Game. The game combines math facts (multiplication and addition) with learning about electoral votes & elections.
It’s pretty fun and could be a great way to include some board game time in your lessons leading up to election day!
Watch some Videos
YouTube videos have been the subject of many heated conversations among homeschool parents. I’ll be the first to admit there are some absolute junk videos on YouTube (like, why are we encouraging kids to watch videos of toy unboxings instead of actually playing with toys??), but YouTube can be an incredible asset to many homeschool lessons!
Since we’re chatting about election day activities, you might consider having the kids watch some of these YouTube videos (definitely watch alongside them – just because the intended content can be educational doesn’t mean the commercials are, so you may be need to mute the volume or tell the kids to close their eyes…ugh):

As you likely know, there are TONS of videos on YouTube, but those three should help to get you started!
Make a Lap Book
Last year, we used a kit from Sonlight to make an Election Lap Book! It was a great way to learn how United States elections happen in a hands-on way. It is a little pricey, but I feel like the educational value is definitely there. Plus, the set comes with nearly everything needed to complete a super informative Lap Book that the kids can refer to again and again.
Complete a Presidential Election Activity Packet

My kids are super excited for the upcoming presidential election. They’ve been learning about the different candidates, have watched live videos of the various conventions & rallies, and are looking forward to joining me (once more) to the election booth.
To help make this election season as memorable as possible for them (and for your kids, too!), I created some activities for them to complete in the days leading up to, and on, election day.

As you go about teaching the kids about elections, just remember that it could take them some time and repetition to learn it all. Heck, I’m *cough cough* 40 *cough cough* something and am still learning things about the US government.
Don’t stress if it doesn’t all click right away. Just keep doing what you can to make learning activities meaningful & accessible!
