Chuck E Cheese Homeschool Play Day: Is it Worth It?

On the second Tuesday of every month, select Chuck E Cheese locations host a Chuck E Cheese Homeschool Play Day. It is worth it though? As the parent of a Chuck E Cheese fanatic we, of course, had to check it out. I’m sharing our experience in hopes of helping our fellow homeschool families determine if this Chuck E Cheese homeschool discount is a deal…or a steal. Let’s chat!

Generations of Fun!

As an 80s baby, I spent a fair amount of time visiting my local Chuck E Cheese locations in South Jersey. Whenever Chuck E Cheese coupons would arrive in the daily paper, my mom would save them for future use – a way to wear my brother and I out while keeping us fed. It was the best of both worlds! My brother and I even had a joint birthday party there and I distinctly remember him getting sick while sitting at the head of the birthday table.

Ew. Gross. Memories are fun, aren’t they?

Anyways, while that memory will always stand out, we also spent countless other Christmas Eve evenings within the brightly colored walls of our local Chuck E Cheese. That really was one of my favorite traditions. My brother and I would each get a plastic cup with an equal portion of the gold-toned game tokens before being given the freedom to roam the game rooms on our own while Munch’s Make Believe Band played Christmas tunes in the background

It was glorious 90s fun.

When I became a parent, I was determined to share that same fun, minus the unfortunate birthday party experience of my childhood, with my own kids!

I took my oldest there for a birthday party when he just over a year old. He enjoyed the bright lights and sounds, but obviously didn’t get to experience the arcade games at that point.

Fast forward a few years when I took both of my boys to our local Chuck E Cheese location. They both loved the games, but my oldest was terrified of the animatronics. My husband I decided it would be best to wait a little bit to take the kids back. After all, we wanted the kids to have a great time…not be scarred for life!

Before we knew it, 2020 had started and we were soon in the thick of “all the things,” leaving us unable to visit restaurants and various attractions in person. Wouldn’t you know…my oldest started watching Chuck E Cheese videos on YouTube and wound up becoming a Chuck E Cheese fanatic?

Now, my son can tell you the complete history of Chuck E Cheese – from the Rock-afire Explosion at ShowBiz Pizza Place, to the various stages, concept unification, declaring bankruptcy…the whole shebang. He uses household items to create his own “animatronics” at home – they’re pretty impressive! He even wrote a letter to Aaron Fechter…the poor kid spent so much time writing a meaningful, legible letter and never got a response back (I understand people get busy, but his poor heart was broken).

Anyways – we’ve now visited Chuck E Cheese locations quite a bit since my son established his fandom. When I saw that Chuck E Cheese homeschool days were starting up, I knew we had to stop by and check that out.

So, are the Chuck E Cheese Homeschool Play Days worth it? Are there better deals to be had? Let’s chat a bit more, m’kay?

Educational Benefits of Arcade Games

You may be thinking “Elizabeth, you’ve fallen off your rocker if you think arcade games are educational,” but hear me out! Much to my 11-year-old’s dismay, I’m not saying we should have the kids playing arcade games day in and day out, but they certainly do offer a number of learning opportunities like:

• Hand-Eye Coordination & Motor Skills: Many arcade games require quick reflexes and precise movements, improving hand-eye coordination. Games involving buttons, joysticks, or touchscreens can also help fine-tune fine motor skills.
• Problem-Solving & Critical Thinking: Puzzle-based & strategy games encourage kids to think critically and make quick decisions (like those coin-pusher games…I love them!). Some games also require players to recognize patterns, plan their next move, or use logic to win.
• Math & Counting Skills: Because YOU KNOW the kids are all about the prizes, ticket-based reward systems help kids practice counting, addition, and subtraction…even if the tickets are virtual! Some games involve timing, scoring, or strategic allocation of resources, reinforcing basic math concepts.
• Patience & Perseverance: Kids learn the value of persistence as they try to improve their skills and achieve higher scores…always aiming for the top spot on the winner’s list! Many games also require repeated attempts to succeed, teaching resilience and determination.

• Social Skills & Sportsmanship: Multiplayer arcade games encourage teamwork, cooperation, and friendly competition. Taking turns, cheering on friends, and handling wins or losses gracefully are valuable life lessons so consider inviting a friend or two along for the Homeschool Play Day!
• Spatial Awareness & Reaction Time: Racing, sports, and shooting-style games require players to track moving objects and react quickly. These skills can translate to real-world activities, such as sports & driving…and we can all use good drivers on the road!
• Strategic Thinking & Planning: Games with levels and increasing difficulty help kids develop planning skills and adjust strategies. In addition, decision-making in games can mirror problem-solving in everyday life.
• Sensory Processing & Focus: The flashing lights, sounds, and fast-paced nature of arcade games help improve focus and sensory processing. Kids with sensory-seeking tendencies may find these environments stimulating and engaging.

Arcade games certainly don’t replace traditional learning activities, or even physical or occupational training sessions. They can certainly help contribute to a well-rounded education by reinforcing cognitive and motor skills in a fun way, though!

Chuck E Cheese Homeschool Play Day

Just in case you’re totally new to this Chuck E Cheese deal, here are the details for the Homeschool Play Day offer:

• WHAT: 90 minutes of All You Can Play Games & earned tickets, a reusable Play Pass card (the website says this is included, but we were charged per initial card at our location), unlimited soft drinks
• WHEN: the 2nd Tuesday of every month, from open to 4pm
• WHERE: select Chuck E Cheese locations
• WHY: fun, of course
• HOW: pay $11.99 per child for this experience at participating locations

Did my kids have fun? Heck yes.

Do I think this special offer is a value? Ehhh…there are some different factors to take into consideration. I’ll explain a bit more.

Our Experience

We used to go to a homeschool co-op on Tuesdays, so we ended up attending the Chuck E Cheese Homeschool Play Day after completing a day of lessons. We all thought 90 minutes of games would be a great way to finish up our day!

And, we weren’t wrong!

Both of my boys had an absolute blast. They each zipped around the arcade floor playing all the games their hearts desired while taking mini breaks to enjoy a sip of their unlimited beverages. I set up camp at a booth by the window where I could keep an eye on the boys no matter where they ended up. Sweet!

Since we had just moved to Georgia, this particular visit was our first at this specific location. Had I known better, I would’ve brought my laptop along so I could get some work done – this location had electrical outlets at each booth and free Wi-Fi was just a click away! I’m not sure if every location offers those perks, but, if you’re a work-from-home parent like I am, it could totally be worth checking out!

All in all, my kids had a great time. They played games up until the very last minute and really took advantage of the unlimited soft drinks. We did stop by the prize showcases, but they decided they’d rather save up their points for some bigger prizes…exactly what I would’ve done as a child!

Was the Chuck E Cheese Homeschool Discount Worth it?

After spending 90 minutes at Chuck E Cheese, do we feel like this homeschool deal was worth it? I feel like it was a decent value for us. I ended up spending about $30 total after being charged for the initial event fee, new Play Pass cards, and tax. Being that we live about 45 minutes away from our Chuck E Cheese location, the homeschool day was a nice treat for all of us.

If we lived closer to the restaurant, though? Then, I wouldn’t consider the Homeschool Play Day to be a great value…and here’s why – Chuck E. Cheese offers memberships! The memberships:

• start at $7.99 a month
• allow up to 6 kids to share one membership
• include exclusive bonus experiences (which would be worth its weight in GOLD to my kids)
• include savings on food & drinks
• let passholders play games EVERY.SINGLE.DAY. of the month
• are valid at multiple locations! (especially amazing if you like to travel like we do!)
• are available in seasonal 2-month memberships and annual 12-month memberships

Now you see why the homeschool day could be considered both a great deal and a not-so-great deal, right? If we lived closer to our Chuck E Cheese, I would definitely take advantage of their membership. Heck, I’d probably even grab their top-level Gold Pass (it lets members play 250 games per day!). But, since we’re a bit of a drive from the nearest location, their Homeschool Play Day is a great fit.

It’s Where a Kid can be a Kid!

It seems like we were kids just yesterday, right? Now, we’re somehow raising kids of our own while homeschooling them and somehow managing the home, jobs…I could go on and on! It’s realizations like this that have made me really appreciate the time & experiences I get to have with my own kids. Yes, we spend plenty of time doing lessons & cleaning the house, but I also make a point to get out their and have fun together, too – visiting Chuck E Cheese is just one of many ways we achieve just that!
