Christmas Silly Stories: Fill in the Blank Printables for Kids!

Creating funny Christmas stories together is such a fun way to make special holiday memories! My fill-in-the-blank Christmas silly stories are perfect for keeping the kids laughing, and learning, all season long.

Teaching the parts of speech isn’t exactly the most thrilling part of homeschooling, is it? Even back when I was a classroom teacher, I was always looking for ways to make lessons more engaging. Filling out endless worksheets and relying on repetition just didn’t cut it for me…that’s so boring!

Whenever possible, I’m always happy to include educational games, documentaries, and other fun learning opportunities into our homeschool days. As helpful as textbooks can (sometimes) be, when learning is fun, it’s more memorable!

It should come as no surprise that my kids have done their fair share of fill-in-the-blank stories when working on learning on their parts of speech. Heck, even after they’ve nearly mastered knowing their parts of speech, silly stories are still fun!

This Christmas, we’ll definitely be including my free Christmas silly stories in our Christmas homeschooling days. You should totally include them, too!

Christmas Homeschooling

Homeschooling during the holidays can get stressful, I get it! Luckily, there are plenty of easy ways to include a bit of Christmas fun & learning into your homeschool days like:

• Solidifying Basic Number Skills: completing an advent calendar or two is a must for my kids every year. Not only do they usually talk me into getting them a toy advent calendar of some sort, but I also have them complete one of my printable calendars. I have an advent calendar for non & pre-readers and an advent calendar for kids with an understanding of numbers, too!
• Gratitude Activities: My Christmas Cootie Catchers offer a hands-on way for kids to show gratitude during the Christmas season. You could also encourage the kids to write a note to a friend family member, too! My Christmas-themed lined papers will make those letters extra festive.
• Writing Prompts: I love that writing prompts offer an easy way to get my kids thinking and writing creatively each and every day! My National Days to Celebrate in December prompts are super fun and could definitely be paired with my Christmas writing prompts!
• Budgeting: Remember when Black Friday used to be on ONE day?? Those days are long gone, but there are still Christmas deals to find! Have the kids go present shopping for others with you! Let them know the budget and have them help you stick to it.
• Cookie & Baking: My kids LOVE making (and eating) Christmas cookies. Have the kids help you bake and, to add some extra educational value, double a recipe or two and have them do the math to the appropriate measurements.
• Languages: Do the kids know how to say “Merry Christmas” in multiple languages? Grab this “Christmas in many languages” printable and they’ll be well on their way to wishing friends and family a Merry Christmas in a variety of languages.
• Attention to Detail: Take the kids out to see neighborhood Christmas decorations! Not only will they have fun looking at the bright lights and decorations, but they’ll also be making lifelong family memories!

Christmas can certainly be hectic, but it can totally be worth it to schedule a few family-friendly & educational activities into your schedule!

Christmas Silly Stories

My kids absolutely love completing silly stories, so I bet your kids will feel the same! They’ll have so much fun reading their silly stories that they likely won’t even notice that they’re learning their parts of speech!

What’s a silly story? Well, you might notice they look familiar to some popular fill-in-the-blank type activities with a name that may or may not rhyme with “fad mibs.”

Silly stories are stories that are almost complete, requiring the kids to use their creativity to come up with a variety of words to fill in the blanks. The kids don’t get to pick just any ol’ word, though – they have to provide specific parts of speech and words like:

• nouns
• verbs
• adjectives
• Christmas song
• relative
• food
• location
• Christmas movie

In just a sec, you’ll be able to request my set of 12 free Christmas silly story printables – they’re perfect for celebrating the 12 Days of Christmas! For now, though, let’s go over the directions for completing your fill-in-the-blank stories:

• Gather your Words: Look at the list of blanks and fill in each one with the type of word it asks for (e.g., noun, verb, adjective). Be creative and silly for extra fun!
• No Peeking: Don’t read the story while filling in the blanks—just focus on the word list for now. It’s more fun if it’s a surprise!
• Fill in the Blanks: Once all the blanks are filled, copy your words into the spaces in the story.
• Read your Story: Read the completed story out loud to yourself, your friends, or your family. Get ready to laugh at the funny and unexpected results!
• Read and Enjoy: Let everyone take a turn creating their own version to see how different (and hilarious) the stories turn out!

As a parent of two goofy kids, I’ve got to say—when it’s time for them to come up with words for things like parts of speech, family members, or random items, you might want to lay down a few rules. Or just let the chaos happen!

It’s really just a matter of personal preference. Honestly, I’m just glad they can tell an adjective from a verb!
