What’s the Chinese Zodiac?

When we lived in New Jersey, we used to visit our local Chinese restaurant for meals quite often. The food was amazing, the staff was super friendly, and the pricing was reasonable. We’d get takeout every now and then, but we really enjoyed being able to enjoy a meal in their small dining room of only 6 tables.

After being seated, utensils and paper placemats featuring the Chinese zodiac animals would be brought over for all of us. That’s when the fun really began! My husband and I would be chatting with the boys about the different Chinese zodiac signs we all had and whether or not our animals “fit” each of us.

And, while the conversations always seemed to be very low-key & light-hearted, I honestly feel like they encouraged the boys (and my husband and I!) to really connect with each other and to learn more about the differences between positive, and sometimes not-so-positive, personality traits. Learning opportunities really are all around us!

But what is the Chinese Zodiac? Why did the placemats have information about this instead of perhaps the menu of the restaurant?

PS – did you know the kids could earn free meals from Panda Express just by reading books?! Mmhmmm!

The Chinese Zodiac is a way of connecting years with animals. There are 12 animals, and each one is tied to a certain year. So, depending on the year you were born, one of these animals represents you. Here’s the lineup: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Pretty easy to remember once you see them listed out.

So, how does it work? Well, each animal comes around once every 12 years. For example, if you’re born in 1984 like me, your zodiac animal would be the Rat. The next Year of the Rat wouldn’t happen until 2032. It’s like a big repeating cycle, kind of like a clock.

Ever wonder how they picked the animals? There’s an old story about a race. Legend says that these 12 animals were in a competition to see who could cross a river the fastest. The Rat, being clever, hitched a ride on the Ox’s back and jumped off at the last second to win. That’s why the Rat is first on the list. Fun, right?

Why Include Chinese Zodiac Coloring Pages in your Homeschool?

About the Chinese Zodiac Coloring Pages

Yes, I know the title of this article makes it pretty clear that my free printable includes 24 printable Chinese Zodiac coloring pages, but what will the kids actually be coloring in and learning about? I gotchu!

Since there are a total of 12 Chinese Zodiac signs, my downloadable coloring pages include 2 pages per sign. Here’s what each page includes:

• Page 1 is considered an Informational Page including the following:
  • the animal of that Chinese Zodiac sign
  • the birth years for that sign
  • a few qualities that sign is believed to have
  • an image of the animal
  • the Chinese sign for that animal
• Page 2 is considered an Interactive Page including the following:
  • an image of the animal
  • the Chinese sign for that animal
  • a written name for the animal in English and Traditional Chinese
  • MY FAVORITE PART: a QR code that, when scanned, will direct you to a Google Translate link so you and the kids can hear the Chinese pronunciation of the animal. How cool is that?!

The animal images are adorable! The kids are going to love these coloring pages!
