When it comes to reading, we want to make it as meaningful, memorable, and fun as possible, right?! In short, book summary printables are a simple, but effective, tool designed to help the kids break down and understand the books they’ve read. Think of them as a simple & memorable way for young readers to organize their thoughts while pulling out the most important parts of a book. Instead of struggling to summarize each and every chapter (boring as heck if you ask me), kids can use the template to note key details and even provide an “out of 5 stars” ranking of the book they just completed.

Components of the Book Summary Printables

I don’t know if you’ve noticed at all but I like to keep all my free printables as “to the point” as possible. Every activity has a purpose and I do what I can to keep the pages as clean and accessible as possible (most of my printables are made using dyslexia-friendly fonts!). My book summary printables are no exception!

A simple 3-page book summary printable set, the downloadable PDF file includes the following:

  • 1 Cover Page: print one per child, the cover page has plenty of open space for doodles
  • 1 “Books I’ve Read” Page: start by printing one page per child & print more as needed. Each page has enough space to document the title, author, & page count of 15 books
  • 1 “Book Summary” Page: start by printing 15 per child (to correlate with the 15 book spaces in the “books I’ve read” page). Each page has space to document:
    • book title
    • author
    • date (open to interpretation, but I’d have my kids mark down the date the book was finished)
    • page count
    • rating on a scale of 1-5 stars
    • genre
    • one word to describe the book
    • main characters
    • setting
    • summary of the book
    • theme of the book
    • favorite character
    • favorite quote
    • “this book made me feel”

Many of my printables can be appropriate for kids of many skill & learning levels but I would say these printables could be best used by upper elementary to middle-school age kids. You know your child best, though, so if your child is older or younger…go ahead and give them a try!

Before I share the form to request access to the printable, let’s chat a bit about implementing the book summary printable into your homeschool days and why this could be a great alternative to the typical book report!

Benefits of Using Book Summary Printables for Kids

In all my years as a homeschool parent, and even as a former teacher, I feel like I’ve seen every form of book report known to mankind. You know what? Many of them are super boring and seem to to be super redundant and time consuming. It’s my goal to make sure my kids understand the content they’re reading and, honestly, I just don’t feel like full-blown book reports are necessary.

Why should you consider using my book summary printables, though? Even though they can be completed in a fraction of the time required for a multi-page book report, my book summary printables for kids offer a number of educational benefits by:

  • encouraging creativity: kids these days are used to checking out reviews for things like video games and local restaurants by seeing a rating based on 0-5 stars. There’s no reason why books can’t be rated the same! The book summary PDF allows kids to rate the book they just completed by coloring in up to 5 stars – fun, right? In addition, the book summary lets kids share things like their favorite quote (a great opportunity to encourage highlighting in books…not library books, though!), and their feelings about the book, and a section to describe the book in one word.
  • fostering a love of reading: by making the book summary short and approachable, kids are more likely to look forward to reading rather than dread it! Homeschooling parents know a quality education doesn’t have to take a lot of time, so we might as well encourage activities that get the job done efficiently and encourage kids to continue reading!
  • enhancing reading comprehension: when kids do activities like summarizing a book, identifying a book’s theme, and noting key events & characters, they’re building their reading comprehension abilities! It’s like putting a puzzle together piece by piece – they can clearly see how all of the story elements fit together.

Incorporating Book Summary Printables into your Homeschool

Some homeschool families have fully-structured homeschool days while others are more laid-back & eclectic. However you tend to classify your homeschool style, I’m willing to bet you’ll find the book summary printables easy to include in your homeschool plans!

For example, the printable set could be helpful when reading:

  • monthly themed books: consider encouraging the kids to read books that coincide with the National Month themes, holidays like Christmas, Thanksgiving, or the 4th of July, or even books with a seasonal theme!
  • special interest books: maybe your student is thinking about the future…encourage them to read books about various careers! Maybe your child has a newfound love of bald eagles! Or is interested in learning about civil rights! Whatever their interest, let them read.
  • novels: not gonna lie, my kids are more apt to read graphic novels than they are to read the typical sans-images novels, but the book summary printables will work for any sort of book…including novels!
