I have been searching for a homeschool art history curriculum to include in our homeschool days for years, but I couldn’t find one that checked all the boxes.
I wanted a curriculum that would introduce my kids to great artists and famous works of art without feeling dry or overly academic. I didn’t want a curriculum that simply had my children memorize names and dates. That’s so boring! I wanted them to experience art, create it, appreciate it, discuss it, and make connections with what they were learning.
You guys…I’ve finally found the homeschool art history curriculum of my dreams. Like, I legit unpacked the materials from the shipping box and immediately started “ooh-ing” and “ahh-ing.” A couple of high-pitched squeals may have escaped my mouth, too. I imagine it was quite a scene to behold.
My friends, I am so happy to share my review of the Art Appreciation Family Study from Beautiful Feet Books. The search – yours and mine – for the perfect homeschool art curriculum may have come to a glorious end. Let’s chat.

Art Appreciation for Families
One of my favorite parts of this curriculum is that it’s designed to be done as a family. After all, one of the reasons we started homeschooling was so we could spend more time together! While we do include a variety of independent lessons and activities in our homeschool days, there’s just something dreamy about being able to crack open a (gorgeous) curriculum set and explore art history with my whole family.
Yep. The whole family! Designed for use with kids in grades 5-12 (though I’m confident it could enjoyed by younger kids as well), this art curriculum isn’t just any old art history curriculum – it’s also an art appreciation curriculum.
Instead of asking the kids to simply remember information for a “one and done” quiz, each of the 64 lessons (1 lesson per week, spread over 2 years) help them to develop an understanding of artistic details, notice the details they might otherwise overlook, and form their own thoughts and opinions about various works of art & artists from a variety of time periods and styles.
Within each lesson, there are engaging stories, photographs, and historical facts coming together with art for a well-rounded meaningful, memorable, and fun art appreciation education. Lessons sometimes include an art-themed recipe. The foodie in me especially loves this feature!
What’s Included?
The Beautiful Feet Books Art Appreciation curriculum includes:
- Book of Artists: a gorgeous hardcover book thoughtfully designed with full-color photos, informational text, recipes, and more.
- Art Notebook: for student use, this 96-page notebook is included in each lesson & allows kids the ability to share information about their lesson (title, artist, rating, thoughts).
- Note: I ended up purchasing a second notebook so I could do this course with both of my boys.
- Art Cards: 36 8″x10″ full-color cards of historical paintings.
- Note: To store & protect the cards, I put each one inside a page protector in a binder. I initially considered laminating each card, but decided against that – the cards are such high quality, I may frame & display them in the future.
- Teacher Guide: a sturdy paperback guide that includes all 64 lessons. Within each section, you’ll find a variety of activities such as:
- read: pages to read in the Book of Artists
- discuss: open-ended questions about the art/artist
- record: short writing activities in the Art Notebook
- play: hands-on art activity or recipe
- explore: watch related videos that are linked via a QR code (so cool!)
- rabbit trails: options to further the lesson by reading suggested books
- Downloadable Resource Packet: a super-helpful “lesson at a glance” type guide that lists the art materials needed for each lesson, art card lesson outline (which card goes with which lesson), and the 5 included recipes.
As helpful as this information can be, I know I always appreciate being able to check out a sample of a curriculum before purchasing. I certainly suggest checking out the sample of this homeschool art history curriculum for yourself so you can see how truly beautiful & high-quality it is for yourself!

What I Love About This Homeschool Art History Curriculum
Do you have a cup of coffee in your hand? Sitting down in a comfy seat? I mean, there are quite a few features I love about this art curriculum, so you might as well hunker down and get comfy.
Open & Go
This curriculum is truly open & go from the shipping box to the sofa. Or kitchen table. Or homeschool room. Wherever you and your kids do homeschool activities, you can get started appreciating art right away. With the exception of a few specific art materials, like glass tiles and a piece of burlap, my basic supply of art materials has everything needed to complete all of the art activities included in all 64 lessons!
Oddly enough, I just happened to donate a large piece of burlap mere days before receiving this Beautiful Feet Books curriculum in the mail. Go figure – at least the art supplies I still need to source won’t break the bank!
One Curriculum for the Whole Family
You guys…homeschooling can be expensive! Especially if you’re homeschooling multiple kids at once, all the costs of purchasing various levels of curriculum can add up fast. I love that this one art curriculum can be used by the entire family, allowing families to get more bang for their buck.
Multiple Years
Adding to the budget-friendly aspect, it is so rare to find a curriculum that’s designed to last 2 years. Am I right? I didn’t even know that was a thing before finding Beautiful Feet Books.
In addition to making my wallet happy, being able to use one curriculum for two years is a sanity saver, too. I am so glad I won’t have to make any decisions about art classes for my boys for the next 2 years. One less thing to worry and stress about!
Flexibility
I have bought many curriculum sets that come with a pre-set schedule requiring 4-5 days of lessons per week. Many of them have been amazing, and much of the content has actually needed that much time & dedication to complete the full unit. Sometimes, life just “happens” and, for whatever reason, we’re not able to dedicate the full time to the lessons one week.
Then, we’re left scrambling to “catch up.”
That can’t happen with this art curriculum. Why? There’s only one lesson per week! If I initially aim to get the weekly art lesson done on Monday, but one of the kids is sick or we have something else to do, it’ll be super easy to just move it to another day!
This homeschool art history curriculum offers so much flexibility, allowing for life to happen alongside homeschooling.

A Dream Come True!
Even though I was a teacher, I really do not consider myself to be a great option for actually teaching art history. I love creating art, but…figuring the history of art and artists? That does not sound like a great time to me. No thank you.
I am not exaggerating one bit when I tell you I have been trying, for years, to find a complete, quality art curriculum.
I’ve tried signing the boys up for in-person art classes only to be disappointed over and over again. So many teachers treating their classes like a revolving door with students viewed as a portion of their paycheck. So many course descriptions sounding like an absolute dream online only to have the in-person class be drier than a forgotten ham sandwich.
Only one teacher (a beloved art teacher turned friend in West Georgia), took the time to actually get to know my kids and treat them as they should.
Remember those squeals that escaped while I was opening the shipping box? That was because I had finally found THE art curriculum of my dreams:
- history of art & artists is actually interesting
- activities are engaging & memorable
- the price is beyond reasonable
- recipes are included as art!
- lessons are great for ALL learning styles!
Spoiler alert – this homeschool art history curriculum has impressed me so much that, when I was at the FPEA convention in Florida this year, I decided to go ahead and purchase the Beautiful Feet Books Music Appreciation Family Study as well.
It’s that legit. The next two years are going to be so artsy & musical and I LOVE that!
