Prepping for a visit to the art museum and want some fun activities to keep the kids learning & engaged? My free, printable art museum activity pack could be just what you’ve been looking for! Today, I’m sharing just one of my many free educational printables with you along with some of my best tips for making the most of your visit to the art museum.

Field trips have always been one of my favorite ways to learn. When I was in elementary school, I remember going on trips to local amusement parks, visiting local historical landmarks in an effort to learn more about my hometown (back in ’94 – my favorite field trip!), and even watching a major league baseball game!

It’s the moments of hands-on learning that have stuck with me for years and years, so it’s not surprise I enjoyed including field trips when I was a teacher. Believe it or not, but having the ability to include more family travel into our days was one of the reasons my husband and I decided to start homeschooling our boys back in 2020.

Now that we’ve been homeschooling for a number of years, we ‘ve gone on a ton of adventures together! The boys and I always chat about how cool it was so see Kia vehicles assembled from start to finish, our favorite exhibits from our local aquarium, and even the gorgeous butterflies and feeding the lorikeets at Butterfly World in Florida! Don’t even get us started chatting about going on cruises together – one of our favorite ways to see the world!

To be honest, it’s actually been a while since we’ve visited an art museum. We went to one during our trip to Baltimore a few years back, but I’m thinking that was the last time. Oof! Good thing I made this art museum activity packet – it’ll certainly come in handy for our next (hopefully soon) visit to an art museum.

Anyways, I have a bunch of tips to share in hopes of making your next field trip to an art museum the best it can be! Let’s get going!

Art Museum Tickets

I’m all for saving the homeschool community a buck or two when I can…I mean, I created a full-blown, ever-growing collection of free printables for homeschoolers, right?! I also have a bunch of suggestions for free homeschool art classes! OF COURSE, I’m going to share my tips on snagging some deals on tickets to the art museum!

Deals will certainly vary by location, time of year, and even age of kids attending, but some of my favorite ways to save on tickets to the art museum are:

  • Museum Reciprocity: Sounds fancy, right? If you already have an annual membership to an art museum, there’s a good chance you can use that same membership to visit other art museums at a deep discount…or even free. Definitely check out my museum reciprocity article for all the details. It can be a little confusing at first, but I promise it’s worth the time & brain power to figure it all out.
  • Local Library: Most local libraries have some pretty amazing resources available to patrons. From borrowing books, to homeschool classes…to tickets to local attractions! Check your local library because they may have a pass to the art museum available for loan!
  • Buy Nothing Group: You know how some museums offer free passes so members can bring friends and family at a discount or free? Might as well ask around your local Buy Nothing Group on Facebook to see if anyone has benefit tickets they’re not planning on using!
  • Homeschool Group Visit: Check the website of your art museum to see if they offer any special group pricing, opportunities for tours, etc. There’s a good chance they offer educational group pricing with a minimum attendee count. Get your homeschool co-op together, get some homeschool friends together…and plan a group visit to the art museum!
  • Local Savings Apps: savings apps, like Groupon, seem to always have field trip tickets available for great prices.
  • Art Museum Social Media: sometimes museums will offer a reduction on ticket pricing for certain days of the week, various holidays, spring break, etc. In my experience, Facebook & Instagram seem to be the most reliable for finding information on deals for art museums, science museums, aquariums, and more.
  • Homeschool Convention Offers: If you’re attending a homeschool convention this year (you totally should – they can be so helpful!!), there could be exhibit booths with offers for local attractions! Definitely see if they have discount tickets for the art museum (among other places!).

Art Museum Activity Packet for Kids

Wondering what all is included in my free art museum activity packet? Well, let’s get to it!

First, I’m going to point out the obvious: you’re likely going to want to print the packet out. If you’re in need of a homeschool printer, I totally suggest checking out the options from Epson – I bought our first Eco-Tank (model #2760) years ago and it is an incredible workhorse. I’ve printed thousands of pages and have really only put ink in the cartridges twice. It’s saved us so much money!

Ok, so what’s included in the packet? Within the downloadable PDF, you’ll find:

  • a full-color Art Museum-themed scavenger hunt: featuring items such as “dog in a painting,” “a column,” and “pop art,” the art museum scavenger hunt is great for keeping the kids focused & engaged during the actual visit to the art museum. I totally suggest putting the scavenger hunt on a clip board to keep the paper flat & easy to carry around.
  • an Art Museum-themed word search (and answer key): featuring 12 art museum-themed vocabulary words. This also has 10 “secret” words (marked on the answer key) that are themed, but not necessarily vocabulary words included in the packet. I don’t know if your kids have noticed finding additional secret words in their previous activity pack word searches? My kids love when I sneak these in!
  • an Art Museum-themed crossword puzzle (and answer key): this art museum activity packet is the FIRST activity packet to include a crossword puzzle! I thought it could be a fun way to include the vocabulary words, you know?
  • Art Museum-themed vocabulary words (1 page with just words, 1 page with words & definition): 20 words including critique, realism, abstract, gallery, & easel.
  • Art Museum-themed writing prompts: with one of each option: Descriptive Writing, Persuasive Writing, Narrative Writing, Informational Writing, and Reflective Writing, I like to have the kids complete these AFTER visiting the art museum.
